Something silly, something serious :: Cookie Monster + Tom Waits · 3:12am Oct 18th, 2016

Was browsing "that" part of YouTube while on break between shifts when I saw/heard something that made me giggle like a loon.

Tom Waits is an american singer and songwriter with a very distinctive voice that has been described as "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car". In a word, he sounds exactly like an adult, bitter, cynical Cookie Monster from Sesame Street; very rough and gravely.

This made the following all the more deliciously silly and barmy: ("cookiewaits" Youtube user did an incredible job synching the lyrics)

Looks like the kids on Sesame Street are about to get a hard, cynical lesson in life..,
(Serious stuff after the break)

On a more serious note, Tom's chorus refrain certainly caught my attention: "God's away. God's away. God's away on business". You do not have to look very far into the daily news (or personal events) to see that something is terribly wrong with the world at large and everything seems to be going to pot.

Some days it is like living in an Elvin Bishop song:

What the Hell is Going On

It certainly got me thinking really hard about things and asking questions: "how big is your god in light of all the things that are going on all around?"

'But SIG', you may say, 'I am an atheist/agnostic/<whatever>. I do not have a so-called 'god'!"

It does not necessarily have to be a person. You have hopes and plans for the future and your life, yes? If so, what is it that you put your hope in and entrust with your life and future? That is your god.

Is your god big enough to carry you through the proverbial dark night of the soul when all your life and plans are washed away like a sandcastle before the tide? When HR unexpectedly calls you up and says your position has been made redundant? When the constable and EMT call up saying that there has been an accident? When the doctor returns with your test results and opens with "You may want to sit down first..."?

How big is your god?
