Grammar and Punctuation

'Ello, mate! 'ow are ya? Glad to have ya here. :pinkiehappy: Ya wanna learn 'bout grammar and punctuation, eh? Ya've come to the right place!

Just kidding. I don't speak that way. :rainbowkiss:

Anyway...

As you may already know, English grammar and punctuation can really seem complicated, especially if you're not that used to thinking in grammatical terms. Grammar and punctuation have to be complicated simply because we use them in such complicated ways---to represent and explain concepts, ideas, and plans; communicate; ask for things; persuade; even lie. So, if you think about it, it's amazing how much our language does, both for us and for others.

Like any good worker would tell you, it's very important to have the right tools for a job. Grammar is a set of rules and conventions that show just what all the different tools it the linguistic toolkit do and how they should be combined into accurate, meaningful phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs.

And the basics, fortunately, are pretty simple and may be at least somewhat familiar from English class or your own experience with the language. After you have the basics down, the rest will come together fairly easily.

Because of this, very few people read articles or books on grammar and punctuation from cover to cover. Most have specific issues they want to help with. Nevertheless, one of the really nifty things about grammar is the way it all fits together. If you really want to understand any of it, it helps to have a sense of what it all is. These lessons are organized both to help people get the big picture of grammar and punctuation to see how their various features work together, and also to be used as quick references for questions and problems as they crop up.

All that being said, tomorrow will be the first lesson. Lessons will be daily or every other day from here on until the lessons are complete.

See you there!
