Some of Bard's Favorite Stories · 1:48am Oct 12th, 2016
Greetings, everyone!
First off, I wanted to thank everyone for understanding about the ground rules and why I created them. Thanks to the comments I received, I have modified them to make them a tad clearer, and they have now been posted on my userpage. Honestly, I do dislike having to have created them in the first place. I don't want to come across as unfriendly or unapproachable. So I thank you all again for your input and understanding.
Now, on to the main point of the blog! Recently, I've been re-reading one of my favorite fics on this site, and I thought, why not put together a list of some of my absolute favorites? And to avoid any bias or unintentional offense, I will not be including fics by friends. So without further ado, here we go!
This was one of the first fics, if not the very first fic, I read when I joined the site. And it did not disappoint. The basic premise: Twilight decides to start a magic club in Ponyville, and things go downhill... FAST! What I liked about it is that the story itself is absolutely hilarious, but it also has moments of heart as well. Plus, the writing style is very engaging, and Biplane got all of the characters spot-on. I read it all in one sitting, and I still love it to this day.
It's no secret that Celestia is my favorite canon MLP character, and this Celestia fic is heartbreaking and beautiful. The basic premise: Celestia meets old friends as enemies on the battlefield, and reveals her deepest desire. The Descendant's writing is prosaic and almost dreamlike, and captures Celestia's voice perfectly. They also manage to bring out so many emotions in a relatively short fic, something which is not always easy to do. Yet none of it feels forced, nor does the central conflict of the story. It is all very well done, and it became an instant favorite.
I discovered this fic by seeing it in the Popular box on the front page. The cover art intrigued me, as did the story description. The basic premise: Rarity doesn't believe in fairy tales, especially not the one about the trapped Princesses and the Spirit of Chaos. Or at least... she didn't used to, until she finds a mysterious library in the Everfree Forest... This is an alternate universe fic, and the premise is handled very well. Thanks to the solid story idea and Monochromatic's writing, the plot is believable and easy to follow along while also providing many twists and turns along the way. There are also still plenty of secrets, and even a code for those who want to play along. It is a gorgeous fic, and I cannot wait to see where it goes next.
Yes, another Descendant fic. One that is haunting, and has stuck with me for a long time. The basic premise: Discord has been turned to stone once more, and chaos' reign is over once again. Life returns to normal for everypony, but someone still wants a chat with the spirit of chaos. What makes this so haunting is Descendant's lyrical writing style, and how he's so able to get into the protagonist's head. It really shows their inner nature in a way that I haven't seen explored before or since. The conflict was portrayed so well, and the resolution was not one that I had seen coming.
And there you have it! Four of my favorite fics on this site! All for various reasons, yet all are wonderful in their own right. Should you read them, I hope you enjoy them as well.
Cheers!
I've never heard of these myself. Though I'll be sure to check them out mate.
