Does anyone else care about canon? · 9:34am Oct 10th, 2016
Do you care about canon when writing a story?
Me personally no, if I'm going to write a fan fiction that contradicts canon I will write it regardless. For I think all fan fiction is an alternate universe, so that in itself is against canon.
Same
Only what has happened before I start writing or won't interfere with my plans and plot.
I reached the point a while ago where I decided the version of Equus I use in my works is probably never going to fit with "canon", and recent episodes have just reiterated that.
Immensely, mostly because I like telling a story with an understandable narrative.
Can't do that without following some canon, or making canon more than it is.
Not really because canon shifts too much.
I feel it depends on the intended plot of the story. Plenty of fics out there, even the ones that try to remain in canon, diverge at some point due to the fact that MLP canon tends to be a little inconsistent. It is useful to keep canon in mind to help make the universe of the story make more sense, but not absolutely necessary. So long as the character(s) is/are recognizable you should be good (I mean, what about pony displacement stories? They take away pretty much all of the MLP universe).
Love your silly stories by the way. Sometimes you just need a Bendy story. Can't wait for the next one!
Not really, no.
I mean, I generally try to stick pretty close to canon if I can, but if I think it's gonna go against my story line or head-canon, then no.
As far as MLP goes, I was able to keep pretty close to show canon from the Season 1 premiere on through the majority of Season 3 with what I've written so far. But after they turned Twilight into an alicorn and a princess? THAT'S pretty much when my stories took a sharp right turn AWAY from show canon.
WITH the notable exception of a few things that I'veshamelessly borrowed FROM Season 4 and beyond.
*cough*Daring Do being a real pony*cough*
(And yes, I'm well aware that the staff at DHX and Hasbro thought that Magical Mystery Cure was gonna be the SERIES finale, so why not make her one and go out in grand style? (Hey, her Element was in a tiara, rather than a necklace, like the other girls' Elements (foreshadowing much, Hasbro?).) That's beside the point for me.)
To put it VERY bluntly, there are TWO things that you will NEVER see in ANY of MY MLP stories: Twilight as an alicorn, or Starlight Glimmer.
Mainly because I have absolutely no words for just how much I absolutely loathe both of those.
And to the Starlight fans on the site? GET mad at me for saying that. I don't care. I hate her, and that's that.
With me I will sometimes take canon but throw it through some "what if" scenarios so I can create a parallel to the canon.
Or most the time I throw canon out the window and do what ever I want in the universe. Canon keeps you're creative mind from working and doing something new and interesting.
I´d say, it depends on the story type too.
