Turnabout Isn't Always Fair Play · 8:08pm Oct 9th, 2016

For a while there I pretty much stopped reading stories on the site. I don't know why exactly but I narrowed it down to general lack of interest and that a lot of new stories were not my cup of tea. That doesn't mean I haven't expanded my horizons though; I've started reading ship fics which I used to give a pass on. Some of them are amazing tales that I love whole heartedly, and some not so much but that's how things are.

Last night I was going over an author's stories seeing what else they had written, and I came across a story I've tried to forget for years now. I don't want to give specifics but it's last few chapters where one of the main reasons I gave up on ship fics for so long. It suckered me in to a pleasant romance, but the it took a nose dive when it portrayed my favorite pony as a heartless, power hungry tyrant out of no where. I'm all for twists and turns but holy hell was that unexpected and unwanted.

I don't think there is a story on this site, spare one, that has gotten such a true and powerful negative response from me. Just seeing it again was enough to kill the high I had from finishing a really lovely story. And the first time? I wanted to hurl my phone into the wall.

I don't know, maybe I'm weird. Have you guys ever had a reaction like that? I know there is some terrible stuff on this site, but at least it tells you or know's what it is before you read it.

Yes I have, there was one fic on FFN that started off pretty good, with Twilight teaching Luna the ropes of the new era... then TwiLuna came out of right field... and then came the Tyrantlestia with the only apparent clue was that Celestia wears jewellery. Yeah stopped reading shortly afterwards and was one of the reasons I took up the mantle as Celestia's Paladin.

For the most part fics that would get that reaction out of me do at least give warnings in their summaries

Generally speaking its a terrible thing when a fic creates strong negative emotions in you.

But sometimes, very rarely, it isnt such a bad thing. For me one such story made me write my own alternative to that fanfic (with approval of the author of course), but since im a talentless bastard it wont ever see the light of the day like anything i do lol, but its still inspiration. :rainbowlaugh:

One type of fic i avoided and probably still do (although it died out mostly) are "Lunar Republic vs Solar Empire" fics, they ALWAYS tend to be "Luna good Celestia bad!", although occasionally i did enjoy trolling by asking them how a princess-leader for life could lead a "Republic". :trollestia:

It honestly doesn't take that much for an author to knife me in the emotional center, so I'm pretty sure I know how you feel. :rainbowlaugh:

I'm curious what the story was, in this instance; it sounds vaguely familiar. PM me a link, if you would?
