My opinion on Legend of Everfree *SPOILERS* · 10:41pm Oct 1st, 2016
I literally just finished watching it, so I thought I'd share my opinions.
It was pretty good, for what it was. It didn't end the way I hoped it would, but I didn't expect it to, either. Regardless, it was definitely an improvement over the idiot-fest that was Friendship Games.
PROS:
* Sunset Shimmer was awesome, as always. She was smart, logical, and even a little sassy. Plus, she got an awesome motivational song.
* I'm glad they finally found a way for the girls to use magic on a whim in a way that actually makes sense. Especially for Sunset Shimmer, who's been deprived of magic for way too long. I just wish they introduced them sooner.
* Flash Sentry gets some decent character development, particularly with Sunset Shimmer.
* The songs were pretty good, and didn't seem shoehorned in.
* It was interesting seeing Twilight confront her "Midnight" persona. Wish we could've seen something like that with Sunset and her own demonic alter ego in Rainbow Rocks.
* Timber and Gloriosa were alright. Not the most memorable characters, but I think Timber's relationship with Sci-Twi has potential.
* The final battle against Gloriosa/Gaea Everfree was an actual battle. Instead of just zapping the evil out of the villain right away with the Elements of Harmony, out-singing them, or persuading them into just giving up, the Rainbooms actually put up a real fight against the villain when they try to save the campers. Best of all, they actually got to use their powers freely, instead of it only working when the plot needed them to.
* I'm very curious about how the crystals emerged from the CHS portal the way they did, and why. Hopefully we'll see a proper explanation for it in the next EQG movie or in FiM.
CONS:
* The option of Sunset Shimmer going back to Equestria STILL isn't brought up. Seriously, the EQG series is four movies in, and they still haven't discussed Sunset's plans on how to take care of her problems with Princess Celestia, her family, etc. However, at least this movie has the excuse of taking place away from CHS, so I wouldn't have expected Sunset to just walk back through the portal at the end.
* It seems strange that the Rainbooms didn't seem at all interested in their new-found powers until Sunset Shimmer encouraged them to embrace it. I know they're just teenage girls and not rocket scientists, but if something weird was happening to me and I had no idea why, I think I'd want to investigate it, if only so that I can tell when it'll happen again.
* Sunset Shimmer's new magic is...kinda lame. I admit, it's pretty cool that she can read minds through physical contact, but it still seems like she's always been receiving the short end of the stick.
Let's examine the powers that the other girls got: Twilight got telekinesis, Applejack got super-strength, Rainbow Dash got the powers of flight and fast running speed, Pinkie Pie got the power to detonate any object that she threw, Rarity could produce energy shields, and Fluttershy could talk to animals ala Doctor Doolittle. If Sunset at least got the ability to teleport or even shoot energy beams from her eyes/hands to go with that mind-reading, it would've been more acceptable.
I felt kinda sour during the scene where Sunset tried levitating objects like Twilight, but couldn't. It just seems like Sunset got ripped off; The girls all have their own powers, but Sunset still has to use her hands for everything.
* For a meta example: I needed Netflix to watch this movie. Not the filmmakers' fault, I know. But still.
That's my two cents. I'd definitely think you should check it out. It's much better than Friendship Games.
