    Update (Without excuses this time!)

Guess what? I'm done writing the next chapter of Manifesto.

I just need to give my prereaders a day or two to look over it, and then it'll go up.

Until then, here's Despacito being played on a guzheng.

    Hey, everyone.

I've somehow gotten out of the habit of posting updates. Oops.

Anyway, you've no doubt noticed that I don't post as often as I once did in the past. This is largely because improvements in my life situation mean I have the wherewithal to engage in hobbies other than writing fanfiction.

    Update.

Goodness, it's been a while, hasn't it? You're probably wondering why my pace has slowed down on Manifesto. Well, there are several reasons, but the most relevant one is that I find myself rewriting large swaths of this chapter as I zero in on the best plan for Sunset to take. I'm basically going back and forth between two ideas that can't really be combined into a single one, and for

    New Story Incoming

In case you missed my last blog post, I'm taking a break from the adventures of Celestia and Daring Do to write the next Petriculture story. At this point it looks like it'll be fairly short -- about two chapters long -- and I recently finished up the first chapter, which will be posted once my prereaders give it a final once-over.

The new story is complete. · 9:59pm Sep 28th, 2016

Like the post title says, the new story, though it still has a bit of revision and polish to get through before submittal, is more or less finished, and I hope to have it posted by the end of the month... which would be Friday.

It's titled "Everything, Including the Stars, Is Falling," and it's going to get Sad and/or Tragedy tags, assuming I can figure out the difference between the two.

And to preemptively answer what I think will be a common question, the name comes from a song by Training For Utopia:

Tragedy means that the protagonist fails at the end. The story could be all bunnies and rainbows up to that point. (It's a literary term)

Sad means that the story is sad.

...I still prefer the old tag FAQ so here are the relevant bits from the Wayback Machine's August 2014 copy of "What do each of the categories mean?"

Sad: The sad category can be a little bit confusing. Choose this category for stories that are designed to evoke sadness from your reader throughout the story. This is a main theme for your story; maybe the character suffers from depression, or it deals with the aftermath of a dear friend's death (remember: that doesn't make this a tragedy). A sad story can end in a happy note.

Example: Never a Rainbow by Norsepony

Tragedy: The most confusing category by far, the Tragedy Category is often misunderstood and misused. A Tragedy has, by definition, a sad ending, but it doesn't mean the story is sad until that point; unlike a Sad story, it always, always will have a sad or bittersweet ending.

In a Tragedy, the heroine fights through amazing odds to achieve her objective, and just as she's about to get there, she fails through her own folly, or perhaps because she cannot fight fate in the end after all. Ultimately the hero fails; their friend dies; the world ends... our hero dies. Any outcome, as long as it involves the hero's failure in their struggle and the bitter result of it is what makes a Tragedy... a Tragedy.

Example: Gift by Shortskirtsandexplosions

Also, I'm in Canada and your player says "This video is not available" when I click the play button.

Here's some unwanted () advice on the difference between Sad and Tragedy, based on my reading of the tagging rules (but IANAMod, so take this with a grain of salt):

Tragedy is for stories that end with nothing - or worse - accomplished. Some adventure story which ended in critical failure would be Tragedy. Indiana Jones and the (first one) I can't remember. So sue me would not count, because while Indy ultimately accomplished squat that wouldn't have happened anyway, the Nazis got killed regardless, so useful things were accomplished.

Sad is for stories with significant sad themes throughout. For example, a deathfic would be Sad however it ended; it might be Tragedy too if everyone else dies at the end, but who would read that? (:fluttershysad:) That Tragedy adventure story might be Sad as well by dealing with Sad themes throughout the story, but ...there's a theme here: if a story is suitable for Tragedy (properly!) and Sad, it's probably laying it on too thick.
(I said properly because surely you've heard of the major misconception about Tragedy. It's meant to invoke the classical Greek usage described above, not the modern use as a synonym for 'sad thing', because that would be redundant.)

(Edit: Oops, someone else has already said it better.)

I actually had this as homework for language arts once.

Tragedy, while the hero is, you know, heroic, he/she has a fatal flaw that is their undoing.
Sad, is ment to make you sad.

Best i got.

That's why I like to summarize "tragedy" as "the hero fails". Indy succeeds at stopping the bad guys, even if no progress was made.
