    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

Ponyville Ciderfest is a go! · 12:53am Sep 23rd, 2016

Technically, my plans to attend the Ponyville Ciderfest con in October have been locked-in for a couple months now. But yesterday I got confirmation that my application to do my Getting Started Writing Pony Fanfic panel again has been approved--so now it's really a go!

If there's anything you guys would like to see or hear about in such a presentation, let me know! I'm definitely going to use the existing content from last time as a starting point, but I also plan to make some tweaks.

Oooooh, Gratz! :raritystarry:

Well, I've always wanted more:

Just talk about all of the things.

ALL OF THEM.

4222122 lol, this time maybe I can do better justice to that one. :derpytongue2: I swear it made sense in my head before I got up in front of people!

4222125 Indeed, my basic plan is to just keep talking until they drag my lifeless body from the stage... or until the end of the hour, whichever comes first. :pinkiecrazy:

You did fine last time, and now you have... Experience!

Congratulations my friend

4222827 "Why yes, in fact I'm quite experienced." :trollestia:

4222934 Thanks! :pinkiehappy:

4223129

You're keeping this panel rated "teen" correct? :raritywink::trollestia: :facehoof:

4223260 Do you know what teens these days get up to?! :pinkiegasp:

Naw, I'm just being obtuse. :derpytongue2: Of course it'll be all-ages. I'm even billing it as all-ages this time. No awkward clop questions after the panel this time! :twilightsheepish:

4224004

Or at the very least you can say "Save the clop questions for the clop panel!" :trollestia:

4224023 Fact: There was an over-18/after-8pm fanfic panel at Whinny City. :applejackconfused:

Eh, who am I kidding, I would have at least checked it out if my time there hadn't been so cramped!

Well, curiosity and all that... :pinkiecrazy:

You know... one of these years I'll have to attempt to attend one of these here conventions. If only so I can make like I'm one of the cool kids. Also an over 18 fiction panel? Oh I know how I'd do that. See, people would come in all ready for all of their "clop" questions and "how to's" and then I'd begin reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. If they complained I would then go to my video presentation of me reading The Scarlet Letter. I'd see just how far I could go and after the room cleared out I'd just keep reading out loud.

4227226 Sounds like you'd be burnin' down the house! :trollestia:

My observation from Whinny City is that the "cool kids" factor is real to some extent, but it's tempered by the fact that we Bronies are, by definition, massive geeks. It's a dichotomy that I want to try to observe and understand more at Ciderfest, because (as I've lamented at 4224050) I didn't get a ton of hooves-on-the-ground time at Whinny City due to family movements.

This time I want to really take it in. I want to learn and play the CCG; I want to try the Secret Shipfic Folder game that everyone talks about; and I want to attend more than 3 panels (including my own). :pinkiecrazy:

4227226

"Sorry, I thought this was a panel where fans read their favorite 18+ fiction."

4227263 Truth be told I never really worried about the "cool kids." For what it's worth... they're everywhere no matter the fandom. Usually if I'm at a con I'm just out doing stuff. Shoot the breeze, listen to music, on occasion help someone with something really minor. When I was at Dragoncon this past year they had a surprisingly large amount of people watching MLP music videos there. I chatted up this one girl running the room. Then I went and waited for The Witch to start because I needed to get my puritan predestination fix.

4227943 Hmm... the only fan I know that might have a shot at reading 18+ fiction is the oscillating type.
