Curse you, canon! · 7:00am Sep 16th, 2016
So I just had a horrifying epiphany
but it's really not all that terrible I just need to brush it off and not worry about it.
So my original plan for the Secret of Ponyville was a story where Rarity holds a tyrannical rule over the citizens of Ponyville, which is actually an ersatz settlement used to hide its own true identity, which is the stage for a performance she broadcasts to the world in order to gain wealth and power. It posed as a sweet innocent town but in truth the characters in her great play were quite miserable and don't enjoy their lives. The story itself is a letter she writes as she realizes she is dying, and comes to a moment of deep regret. I'm avoiding revealing all of the details because I still intend to pursue this route, and I haven't said anything that won't be extremely apparent once I get the story moving.
What I've realized is that this story showed up in canon while I was battling writer's block for it, and I didn't even notice. Starlight Glimmer, in her attempt to be welcomed as an equal member of society, adopted a tyrannical reign over a nearby town which hid its true identity under her rule, posing as a sweet innocent little town in which the citizens are secretly miserable and live in fear of their tyrranical overlord every day. Different motive, but same story, to include the fact that Starlight Glimmer later regretted her decision—although only after much convincing from Twilight.
There are a few details I shouldn't reveal that make it a bit more different, one of which being the power Rarity wields but doesn't understand how to use yet which is granted to her by a three-tailed magical psychic blue fox in a mysterious crystal cave. However, it's still basically the same story and I've just realized that canon has blindsided me again and I really need to work on getting my stories done more quickly.
That said, I am still working on developing the story for The Secret of Ponyville which I totally just revealed the secret. Oops :?. My major stumbling block has been figuring out a way to get Rarity to Ponyville, and stationed there, while developing her character and backstory along the way. She has to be an innocent young filly with morally twisted tendencies who is very confused about her lust for precious items. I've given her a Frienemy in Crystal to help develop and distinguish different parts of her character but I'd still written myself into a bit of a corner and writer's block has had me against the ropes since. I think I might be able to duck out pretty soon here, but I'm taking quite a beating in the meantime, if you'll pardon the American boxing metaphor.
I also do intend to make more of Rainstream but she's actually been quiet while I deal with some personal stuff. Maybe she's sensitive to me, or maybe she went somewhere. She likes to disappear randomly, according to a friend of mine.
Oh? Why does a friend of mine know more about my character than me? He doesn't. But he's declared her his waifu and I may have sent him a plushie I had made of her that was just sitting on my shelf collecting dust. I knew he'd love her better than me, and she liked him too, so I let her go. Anyway, according to him she likes to go off flying for long periods of time and some days he doesn't see her, so maybe Rainstream has simply taken a vacation from my head.
Thanks for reading my ridiculous rant and I hope to have more pony fiction for you to read soon. Also, go check out "Crown of Vengeance" by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory. Queen Vieliessar Farcarinon, child of the prophecy, fights to claim the unicorn throne in order to unite her people against the darkness that is coming. It's what I'm currently reading and has inspired a few of the things you might see in the upcoming chapter for The Secret of Ponyville. Until next time, enjoy yourselves, and as always, Never Stop Writing.
