Quick technical question? · 8:03pm Sep 13th, 2016
I clicked a link on TV Tropes, but instead of showing me the site, it took me to a warning-type page with some popup messages relating to my cable provider and my OS. (I think. I panic-closed the tab pretty quick.) I remember something about it saying that the browser was unable to be closed due without calling an administrator... I was able to close the browser after closing the tab. Plus there was an alarm that sounded. It stopped after I managed to close the triggering page, but I’m concerned... What all should I do to check my system?
I have AVG for my virus protection and am running it as we speak.
The link was to a manga-reading site called Citymanga.
Don't do any banking on that browser or computer till you know it's 100% clean.
I've noticed that there seems to be a new type of pop up ad that can control a browser like that. And it seems to bypass ad-block.
To be on the safe side, try booting the PC in safe mode and then run a virus scan.

I ran AVG and Malware Bytes... Nothing negative so far... I think it was just a bait site trying to get me to call a number or something...
Definitely just sticking to my bookmarks from now on.

4208509 Yes
4208554 In that case it sounds like you may have run into an example of 'Malvertising'.
Malvertising involves injecting malicious or malware-laden advertisements into legitimate online advertising networks and webpages.
This is why I use adblock, but it seems some of them can even get around that.
Get Microsoft Security Essentials. Absolutely free, and can be downloaded Here for your convenience.
4209361 I'm running Windows 10. The website says I already have something similar (Windows Defender).
4209429 That's sorta it, but The Security Essentials runs a full scan tells you a status of your computer, and you can set up when you want it to scan. I have mine set up to go every Sunday at 2:00 AM
Why dont you think i have Adblock´s for this kind of deal?
You might wanna try Avast Anti-Virus.
You also might want to access Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool after everything else. It takes hours to run but it's worth it.
