Stories I've Helped On — Hot Dam · 6:14pm Sep 1st, 2016

(Yes, this is the anthro Dresden crossover I've helped on. Know anthro's a hot-button topic for a few of you, so please just skip the rest of this if you feel that's a deal-breaker by itself. :raritywink:)

After making a blind jump from the Nevernever, Harry Dresden ends up in Equestria, surrounded by attractive females; given his track record with the fairer sex this would be a terrifying proposal even if they weren’t obviously inhuman.

Now trapped until he can find a safe entrance back into the Nevernever, he must attempt to play nice with the local powers (all attractive females), explain his magic to the pre-eminent scholars in the field (all attractive females), and avoid the malevolent forces that seek to use his knowledge for their gain (all attractive females).

Chivalry, it can get a guy killed.

[Teen] - [Sex] - [Adventure] [Alternative Universe] [Anthro] [Comedy] [Crossover] [Human]

Think it turned out quite well. Some nice action and snark both, in a really promising start.

Hope at least a few of you give it a go.

I don't what folks get against anthro

It forces people to confront the real or imagined bestiality/furryness/sexuality inherent in being guys who watch stories about a group of young women of a different species.

Also, anthro is associated with sex and a surprising amount of people are not okay with sex in general, as a concept, and even just being reminded of it pisses them off.

(all attractive females)

The fact that it keeps doing things like this is what. Even the stories that aren't outright porn are always sexualized to the point that it's kind of just sad to watch. When it has lines like "Fluttershy's JJ breasts swayed gently in the breeze" you know the author is writing one-handed. Not actually an example from this story, but seriously, is that even anatomically possible?

I'm plenty fine with sex. What I'm not fine with is witnessíng every random weirdo's masturbation fantasies that involve little pastel horses from a cartoon for little 5-year-old girls, especially because they're always this disgustingly objectifying crap written by men who want to view women as nothing but exaggerated sex toys, not people. It's like reading a bad Skyrim mod. As someone who actually likes women, as people and as sex partners, they represent everything that's worst about men on the internet to me.

Ah, that felt good to get out of my system.

Doesn't say anything about this story. It might actually be good and do that kind of thing well. But, you know, since everyone was asking.

Very Nice! It reminds me of a combination of Horse Feathers and Dresden Fillies - Strange Friends so far I'm glad you helped get such a great fic off the ground!

Some people think it looks creepy or gross, even before you factor in the sexualization.

That said, this is specifically a fanfic about Harry Dresden. His constant inner salivating over how hot every woman he comes into contact with is part of his character.

Can't argue with that. "Spangle-snatch" comes to mind. The sheer variety of colorful metaphors that Dresden comes up with to describe Winter's more explicit habits is both impressive and kind of cringe-worthy. Butcher is a pretty good about keeping it classy, though, most of the time. He makes it very clear that it's what Harry the character thinks... while in the average anthro story, it's very clearly what the writer thinks, as part of the narration. That makes a difference to me. You can make your characters have all kinds of interesting and sometimes eye-rolling flaws and it'll add to the writing, because a good character isn't required to be a good or flawless person. You shouldn't make them your own, though.

That said, I have since found the time to actually read Hot Dam and I am pleased to say that that it's both funny and seems to be a lot better about that kind of thing than the typical bad kind of anthro story. Here's hoping it stays that way.

I personally think the takeaway is to not write female characters that way unless it's specifically aimed at readers who enjoy it as much as you. Also I believe Butcher has admitted that Harry's constant swooning over how hot women are is partially a character trait and partially an artifact of the fact that Butcher was in his 20s when he started the series and he hadn't emerged from the testosterone haze yet. As with many things about the Dresden Files, it would be stupid and annoying if it weren't for the fact that Butcher is a good enough writer to make it work.

That said, in my own writing I do my best to describe Chuck Norris exactly like George R R Martin describing Daenerys Targaryen.

Well, that's why I said "usually." :rainbowlaugh: But yes, on the whole, it's better to just not write female characters like that at all. Only ever describing your female cast as so much eye candy attracts a very specific kind of audience that no one should ever want to attract.

I've never read Martin, so I'm afraid that comparison is kind of lost on me.

Well, he's always talking about how her breasts are swinging freely beneath her painted vest and stuff. I try to do the same thing, only with Chuck Norris.

4187247
There is only one thing I can imagine swinging freely from Chuck Norris and the idea really gets a laugh out of me. :rainbowlaugh:

Chuck Norris awoke with a gasp. He sat there for a long moment, shuddering from the phantom sensations of his journey to the spirit world. Sweat beaded down his hairy, muscular body, cold and clammy to the touch in stark contrast to the hot steam of the sweat lodge around him. With practiced discipline he brought himself under control and rose from his cross-legged position. Mighty legs flexed, tendons and sinews taut with the tension of ready violence. His long member stood fully erect, iron hard and circumcised so as to prevent masturbation and be pleasing to his Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. His mammoth chest was covered with wet hair, so thick that it remained firm even when drenched. His beard, harder than granite, was even more unmoving, defying the water vapor laden air to alter its legendary tensile strength.

That's the opening passage to the novella I'm working on. I call it "Chuck Norris: Ace Reporter." It's about Chuck Norris and his amazing adventures as a hard-hitting investigative journalist on a mission to uncover the truth about the Obama administration.

4187261
That's a bit more detail than I really wanted, but yes, I kind of imagined it like that.

4187263 I'm also working on a Walker: Texas Ranger/My Little Pony crossover. I really need to get the next chapter finished.

I read it, and it managed to grab my attention. I've not read the actual Dresden Files(kind of like I've not watched the actual show for MLP), but it follows along with the good crossovers I've read.
