My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Season 6 Episode 17 - "Dungeons & Discords" (SPOILERS) · 4:02pm Aug 27th, 2016

Alternate title for this episode: "Two Dorks and a Ham".

For the first time in over 130 episodes, it's bro time!

The Mane Six are off to Yakyakistan with Celestia for a goodwill tour. (Are we gonna get a paired episode out of that?) Discord's jealousy of Fluttershy not spending time with him resurfaces briefly.

Fluttershy suggests Discord hang out with Big Mac and Spike. He's a whiny bitch about it because he thinks he's better than they are.

Opposite Discord and Opposite Fluttershy was a HILARIOUS gag.

Discord's a real twat when he's jealous/clingy.

Callback to Party Pooped! Pinkie mentions the yeti.

Awkward bros are awkward.

Discord referencing The Mask, oh my god. :rainbowlaugh:

Good lord, Discord, can you NOT be a ham for just two minutes? :facehoof:

AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Dislestia! Horrifying!

YES! YES! COMIC CANON REFERENCE! Ogres & Oubliettes is CONFIRMED SHOW CANON!

Discord is not a fan of tabletop nerd games. I'm actually surprised Big Macintosh IS. :twilightoops:

Spike's Rarity fixation is saaaaaaaaaaaad. Big Mac's character name is snickerworthy.

Discord's "actively being a dick" antics are amusing.

Honestly, the entire sequence of the three of them "playing" is...awkward and weird. Even when Discord is just being as obnoxious as he can possibly be (with the whole cabaret bit and all). Fortunately, Discord losing his temper and going all Q on them picks the episode up a bit.

Spike and Big Mac geeking out over being in the game for real is awesome.

Hey so...remember when Q did this to Picard? Season 4? "Qpid"? That was a fun episode.

All the guilt-tripping and...whatever was going on in the last few minutes of the episode kinda...yyyyyeah. But the LARPing thing at the very end made up for all of it.

The Mane Six reacting to the O&O LARP is AWESOME. XD XD XD XD XD

On the whole, this was a decent episode, but I feel like they could've done better with it. The pacing was awful. Too much time was wasted on the awkwardness, and not enough time was spent on the O&O LARP. Wanted to give it at least a 9/10 for being the first bros-only episode of the series, but it honestly isn't worth more than a 8/10. Decent episode but not great. The last 2 minutes saved it from a 7/10, though.

EDIT: Fluttershy has the STRANGEST ahegao:

That, I will agree on.

The middle of the episode is definitely the weakest part, but it was still kind of funny with just how aggravated Discord was actually getting.

I actually found the references to Spike's crush on Rarity to be kind of humorous, but that's mostly me being a Sparity shipper.

Definitely one of the weaker episodes of the season, but not the worst.

Well I thought the episode was a fantastic return to form, but then Discord is one of my favourite characters, so I may be slightly biased.

If any local reality warpers are listening in, I could really go for some of that guys' night action!

Not a bad ep, but I still think they should have had Shiny and the nerd herd from the comics along with canonizing O&O.

Edit: Hell, a whole episode, continuing from the end there with the rest of the Mane 6 joining in would be awesome, but it'll never happen. I do like Bard Pinkie being canon, though. (I mean, we've already had Gypsy Pinkie a while back.)

I liked it.

Discord using his magic for his personal antics + LARP was a really good part.

The awkwardness never really does too much good and this was no exception.

But with Discord and his personality, I could be biased myself, but I'll give it 8.5 to 9.

I agree with your rating.

But one thing:
At the End Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie participate in a "Guy's Night"?
Did they grow "something else" when they joined the game?
:rainbowdetermined2: :pinkiehappy:

The pacing thing... People are honestly split on cringe comedy. The ones who love it, adore the time spent on it. To ones who loathe it, that time feels like dead air, bad pacing. I can't abide cringe comedy for the most part, so yeah, it dragged in the middle. And I kind of felt for Discord, I occasionally get dragged into nerd games I find baffling or boring or both. My friends have learned to not drag me into crayon rails or Settlers of Catan, both of which I harbor an irrational dislike for which isn't strictly justifiable.

4175184 its not like the main 6 haven't been futa'ed at SOME point or another in this fandom

Yeah, the pacing was akward, but Discord did manage to keep it from being too boring and uncomfortable. That seems to be the biggest problem this season, pacing. Few episodes have gotten it down pat, even the best of episodes have sometimes rushed through things, or just dragged on for too long with uncomfortable scenes.

They really needed a third character for the regular group. The scenes were a little unbalanced without more of a group for Discord to play off of. The problem is that there just aren't any other regular male sidekicks to include. If they'd just have given the Friendship Castle a couple guards and a majordomo, there'd be *someone* to play audience, straightman, and obligatory comedic red-shirt once Discord started losing his sense of humor.

I agree, having half the episode more about Discord acting like an obnoxious prick and all than about the Tabletop game itself was a turn off. It would've been better if more of the episode was actually about the live game itself instead of the last ten minutes.

A decent episode today. Yes the pacing was awful and it should have been a longer episode to made it better, but they must stick to the 25 minute format.

Like the Mask reference and the cat tail Celestia. Also did Discord suggestions for the evening evolved going in a neon strip? Pretty naughty for kid target audience if it's the case.

What was Starlight doing the entire time? Was she just locked up in her room reading? Seriously, she should have had at least a cameo or something, this is getting ridiculous. I dislike the way they handled her redemption as much as the next guy, but now that they made their bed they gotta sleep in it, and can't just pretend Starlight doesn't exist outside of the episodes that are explicitly about her.

4175261 Maybe she's visiting Sunburst?

4175269 Fair enough. I still feel the writers are treating Starlight more like an accessory to Twilight than her own separate character, and last week's episode only strengthened that suspicion by adding her to an episode with just Twilight without the Mane Six and having her do literally nothing plot relevant at all.

4175269 Most likely someone didn't bother to include any updates to the old script treatment. Unlike the last several, this one feels like a true fifth season script, given the base concept and the various throwaways.

For once in my life, I have no clear indication on how I feel about this episode. I don't think it's good, but at the same time, I don't think that it's bad in any way, shape, or form.

Gotta be honest, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash getting into the game was my favorite part. :rainbowkiss: Also, adorable farm horse is adorable.

I can't stand Discord but the episode was nice enough.

Also,

ahegao

Didn't know what that meant so I decided to search it...

Thanks for that.

Discord referencing The Mask, oh my god. :rainbowlaugh:

That was a FUN movie.

Good lord, Discord, can you NOT be a ham for just two minutes? :facehoof:

I doubt it.

4175409

I was honestly disappointed when they cut off just before Pinks and Dash did anything. I would've killed to see the two fighting!

>slams head in keyboard in eternal rage when episode is cut off way too soon.

4175774 I feels your pain!!! :raritydespair:

YES! YES! COMIC CANON REFERENCE! Ogres & Oubliettes is CONFIRMED SHOW CANON!

THE COMICS ARE CANON!!! THE COMICS ARE OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED TO BE CANON!!!

That being said, I enjoyed this episode a lot. Then again, it was a Discord episode. In my opinion, you have to TRY and make an episode starring him a bad one.

4175705 He´s played by John DeLancie. Q was rarely not hammy. Like, I cannot recall a single Q moment where he wasn´t showboating. Mariachi band onboard the Enterprise anyone?

4176549

Not all of them, just Ogres and Oubliettes.

Funny with Fluttershy and Discord being in the opposite dimension.:rainbowlaugh: Pinkie knows how to tame the savage beast. The mask reference is a nice shout out to a funny movie. Funny to see Big Mac and Spike have a guy's night. I loved the ending where you have Pinkie and Dashie wanted to be a couple of the guys.:rainbowdetermined2:

4177078

The mask reference is a nice call back to a funny movie.

Shout-out, not callback. A callback is when a work of fiction references something within its own continuity. Pinkie's mirror pool clone showing up in Saddle Row & Rec? That's a callback. Referencing The Mask is a shout-out.

Know your tropes, people! :raritywink:

As a roleplayer myself, I was both amazed how much thought was put into some elements- the GM screen, the different shapes of dice, classes and rulebooks galore, and at the same time I cringed just how many things were wrong, first and foremost- THERE WAS NO GM!
Look, I played enough tabletop games to realize that not all of them require one, but that's not a good excuse for not having a character be the one to make all the story up on the spot. Secondly- two people playing an RPG is a very, very sad thing. I would've loved to see less Discord shenanigans in favor of one or two more characters playing and have them be a part of the fun. Heck, maybe even let Starlight into it, as she proves to know those games a lot because she grew up playing choose your adventure books when she was growing up, being lonely and all, but that would be character development in an episode not dedicated to her and we can't have that because kids will be confused or shit.

...okay, I admit, I'm overthinking it, but only because this subject is close to my heart, there's no way I can ignore it. And I get that there's not many "guys" in Ponyville to choose from- when I made my alt universe Stallionverse (is shameless plugging allowed here? I sure hope so...), I had to import 3 our of 6 main characters from outside Ponyville, while the other 2 were background ponies at best, so I know the pain (and that was between season 3 and 4, but not much improved since).

Overall, the episode was okay, last bit totally made up for it and I wish it was more like it all the way.

4176798 Don't ruin this for me! This is a joyous occasion for moi.

4177945

Do you really want all the comics to be canon? Because that includes even the bad ones.

4177961 It's a necessary evil. Can't have the good without taking in the bad.

4178800

Not if the only thing that's canon is Ogres and Oubliettes/that one comic that showed Shining and Cadence in High School.

I was torn in my opinion of this episode. I liked it, but it was executed fairly poorly. I loved Fluttershy's teasing Discord though. It showed how comfortable she is with him, I felt. I feel like Spike should just be over Rarity by now. It's an overplayed gag that completely lost its luster a looong time ago. I've noticed him playing more of a part in more episodes this season, and I like that. He's a good character, but he's often left out of things. I guess he just does his own thing? :rainbowhuh:
