28 Pranks Later & The Times They Are a Changeling · 6:11am Aug 21st, 2016
Hello there, another week two episodes this time. Sorry I didn't write a review for 28 Pranks later last week but i was a little busy going to a birthday party for my cousin as well as a Guns and Roses concert. I actually didn't end up watching the episode until tonight as me and my sis were busy with stuff happening all week and we never quite got a chance to just sit down and watch it until today. So first things first, let's take a look at 28 pranks later. My thoughts below.
I thought this was a pretty good little slice of life episode. We haven't seen Rainbow do any pranks since back in season one in "Griffon the Brush Off" so it was fun to see her plying her trade, even if it became pretty obvious what the message was going to be, barely 5 minutes into the episode. Most of the pranks were funny such as Cheerilee's and Pinkie's while Twilight's prank was made so much better by her deadpan reaction as Rainbow and Pinkie laughed their heads off. However there were a few that I didn't quite find funny and a few that I felt downright sad for the victims. Mostly the one to Mr. Cake and Cranky, I felt, went a little to far and the one with Fluttershy was a little too obvious. I did actually enjoy Rarity's which features one of what I believe to be the staples of comedy, mainly ignoring a quite obvious trap (ti.e on that is designed to look obvious) and instead walking right into the one intended. I had hoped that it would be a little more scary with the main zombie prank, but considering it's a kids show, I suppose it's harmless enough. All in all an entertaining episode with a pretty obvious moral behind it.
Now let's talk about the episode from today, The Times They Are a Changeling. This episode I felt was a lot stronger in terms of moral but unfortunately lighter on everything else. Except maybe Thorax. This was a character that I felt was really well written, what with being born as a creature that can only feed on feelings of love but wanting to just be friends with someone. In that regard I guess it makes sense for Spike to be the first one to reach out to him. He did it with Ember and the dragons and now he's done it to the Changelings as well. The only real downside to the episode was the song. Nothing against Cathy Weseluck but I wasn't a particular fan of her singing. The lyrics were great and it made sense for Spike to be the one to sing it but I just did not enjoy the way she sang overall. But that's about the only issue I had with the episode. So that wraps it up for me from the last two weeks. Next time, break out your 20-sided dice we're going to play D&D (but it's not what you think).
