IN WHICH SHIPPING IS DISCUSSED (hooray?)
Okay, so this is, like, the third time I've tried to write this blogpost. In the false starts, I tried to rant about anime but couldn't come up with anything coherent. So instead, I realized there was something I forgot to put in my Lows & Highs author notes. It's about shipping, or rather the lack thereof. Follow me past the jump!
It actually did take an effort on my part to NOT ship Sunset and Rarity in Lows & Highs. In its predecessor Highs & Lows, I made a vague allusion to the possibility that Rarity might have a thing for Sunset, and then referenced it in the followup. Does that mean that I'm going to set them up in future stories as a lesbian couple?
No.
The way I see it – and this is my AU we're talking about – Rarity is by her nature drawn to attractive things (sapient or not), and my headcanon is that Sunset is pretty much universally regarded as one of the hottest girls in town – sure the townsfolk hate her, but that has little bearing on if they think she looks good. Even if, as I believe, Rarity is primarily attracted to men, who wouldn't blush when a gorgeous older girl (recall also that I peg Sunset as being in her mid-20s) suddenly grabs your face like she's planning to kiss you?
Maybe Rarity is bisexual and in denial about her own feelings? Whether that's the case or not, I'm not interested in exploring it, at least not with her. Same with Sonata, who also seems to like Sunset a little more than seems normal – Daniel-Gleebits explored it better than I ever could with this excellent story.
Note that in my EQG alt-universe, there is a girl who has (or will develop) a serious crush on Sunset. Chances are it's not who you'll be expecting, nor will it work out the way fics on this site tend to go. This will be touched upon in my next two multi-chapter Sunset stories, both of which I have outlined in almost their entirety. I will get to them as soon as I finish the Spike story and Dazzlings story I currently have in-queue. Also, I need to come up with names for them, which is proving much harder than I anticipated. Stay tuned.
In general, I'm not a fan of clopfics. Given the choice, I'll take a low-key romance over graphic descriptions of sex every time. Maybe that's because I'm not a teenager and haven't been one in a long time, so I like for relationships to have more meat to them.
Whatever. Back to anime or household chores or something else mundane.
