If Derpy's to have a kid it's going to be DInky, not that attempt at racial purity.
It could also be a Rainbow/Scootaloo type setup, which begs the question, why isnt Dinky participating.
Then you could go the other route, Its Ditzy's son. And Derpy is her sister. There is a fic i've read where Derpy and Ditzy are twins.
After five seasons of seeing her with Dinky and then this, it's a bit of a slap in the face to Derpy's fans. They know how much this fandom pairs Derpy and Dinky and they do this.
And yes I know I am taking this way to serious. Why you ask. If it where not for Derpy, I would never have started reading fanfiction at all.
I think young Derby is Derpy's nephew or young cousin who wanted to race, Dinky and Sparkler were busy/uninterested.

Eh, I'm not too worked up over it. More than half of Ponyville's children don't seem to exist this episode, given how Cheerilee apparently has a class of nine. Heck, Silver Spoon dropped out of the competition... and as far as I can tell, off the face of the Earth.
For all we know, Dinky's off exploring other dimensions. Or Ditzy's keeping an eye on the disruptive colt whose special talent is disrupting the peace. All kinds of possibilities present themselves here.

That sort of possessiveness makes no sense to me.
For the first four seasons, Derpy and Dinky didn't appear on-screen together once. The fandom just decided, based on absolutely zero evidence, that they must be related. Why should the writers be bound by our random whims?
4136978 Knee-jerk reaction. Possessiveness doesnt make much sense to begin with in a majority of situations. Mayhaps it has to do with how much one invests certain things with meaning, especially to oneself.
Now im a bit curious how Derpy and Dinky got paired. Have they really never been near each other for four seasons? There had to have been something that sparked this, it cant just be the coat and mane colors, can it? Well it really doesnt take much for people to make connections where there are none.
Whims, perhaps fans like acknowledgement and ego stroking as much as writers whom they envy for having such an amazing talent.

Heck, that "cardboard-car" probably would've won the "most traditional" award in his time.
Or he's from a parallel universe where Derpy had a pegasus-colt instead of a unicorn-filly. And he's stuck until Derpy can locate his home-dimension.

This doesn't change anything about Derpy and Dinky.
It's up to us to make sense of it where this colt fits in.
After all, Ms. Cheerlee didn't say "team up with your older sisters/brothers", she just said "team up with an adult of your choice".
So, in this case, head-canon / fanon crisis averted!
That said, I do understand the issue some people have, though. Some episodes are even somewhat stressful to watch for me because it makes me fret for either my own fanfiction currently-in-progress for the past four-ish years, or the fanfictions of others that may feel discouraged to continue if the divergence to canon becomes to great.
In a weird twist, I actually consider the show a "side-piece" to the fanfiction community! Hah! Talk about odd priorities.

Which throws off my headcanon just as much. Because in my continuity, Ditzy’s parents live in Cloudsdale. But if this little guy lives with Mom and Dad, why isn't he competing in the Cloudsdale Derby?

At this point, I think the only Dinky interpretation that fits all her appearances is that she has memory changing or reality warping powers, and she uses them to bounce from family to family at whim.
