This story started with a dream I had, oh... some three years ago now, I do believe. I just remember something about wandering through a neighborhood and making my way to the shore of a huge lake, and staring across it at the lights of another city on the other side.
The second idea behind this, that came to me at the end of 2014, was a bit more... inane. Basically, I wanted to try to write boss fights with the show's major villains, without the Elements Of Harmony or Rainbow Power or Crystal Heart or whatever magical love-powered macguffin to get in the way, and see if the Mane 6 could still succeed - given their skills, I'm sure they'd be able to, but it would be a more engaging encounter, I would think.
Somehow those two ended up rolling together in my head and producing something greater than the sum of its parts. While there still is the aforementioned 'boss fights' in here, there's also a lot more to the story than that, that just kind of came to be the more I thought about this.
And then two months ago I had another idea, an absolutely insane idea, that I won't say now because it's ridiculously spoilery. But basically, that idea has turned a fairly self-contained story into the start of a series of three, which I am calling the Wardens Trilogy:
The Shore Of Infinity
The End Of Eternity
The Death Of Entropy
Suffice to say, there are some time shenanigans involved.
Anyway, that's all in the future. Focusing on the present, the first chapter was interesting to try to write. In a way, it felt a lot like my abandoned story Destiny Is Magic, but in other ways was completely different; for one thing, having the Mane 6 all together from the start led to some interesting interactions that I hadn't really planned for, particularly the conversation between Applejack and Twilight about Spike. One of those cases of the characters just writing themselves.
Next chapter, the Mane 6 learn more about their new place of residence, both the good and the bad.
Oh dear, I'm getting into something monumental, aren't I? :O

One of the most important scenes of the entire trilogy (it'll be a while before we get there) was inspired by this song:
So yeah, this is going to get pretty epic.

But yeah, just from the description, it sounds cool, so it's tracked. :B
