I wonder what would happen if she put on a normal helmet without a hole for a horn. Would the horn grow in the other direction?

I don't know. I doubt it, (but that's just me being cynical) but they were shown in two different episodes. I bet, if we look long enough, we can see it in other ponies who've been electrocuted and that it's a running gag/in-joke with the creators themselves.
But who knows? I know that I'm definitely going to have it be a thing that's discovered in at least one of my stories.
