Writing Ambience · 2:52pm Jul 25th, 2016
Today I'm going to talk a little bit about Writing Ambiance, what it is, why it is important, and the kind that I use.
Writing Ambiance is what I call the environment we write in. Of course we don't always have a choice about what that environment is, but when we do we all have preferences. Some people like complete silence when they write, others listen to death metal. Some people need to be outside, writing at a park or a library, while others enjoy a quiet study to pass the time away in.
To the writer it is imperative that we have a place that isn't distracting, a place to help foster our creativity and bring it to the page. What helps us write as individuals might be distracting to others. Still we need our ambiance to be helpful to our creativity and not harmful to it. This can be a difficult thing to achieve sometimes. In my case a lot of my past writing had been interrupted by family. That still happens quite often, but I strive to find my Writing Ambiance and to make it as perfect as I can before I get to writing. If we are too distracted our writing suffers as a result, but if we can find our inner zen, we are able to tap into the creative process far better than normal.
As for my personal Writing Environments I have a few that I generally go back too. When I can find it I like to listen to music that blends into the background, something that is not intrusive to my thinking process. This includes a lot of video game soundtracks, from Undertale to Donkey Kong Country. If that isn't working I will sometimes switch it up with some soft acoustic guitar, or indie rock.
Now that doesn't always cut it, and sometimes I just need a break from music. So one of the other things I like to listen to is sounds. Traffic going down a highway, the sound of a rainstorm, or of pages being turned between books. Sounds that I find calming are often very useful to my creative process.
Still neither of these can compare to my all time favorite Writing Ambiance. Silence. That's right, complete and utter silence. It's rare that I can achieve it, but when I can I am in love with it. Silence is my favorite ambiance. I tend to get a lot more work done, and a lot of good work at that when I have silence to work with.
So how about you? What do you like when it comes to Writing Ambiance? Got any neat ones for me to try out? Let me know in the comments below. XD
As always thanks for reading, now here's a picture of Maud listening to some rock music.
