Stylo, darf, and NTSTS · 12:36am Jul 20th, 2016

darf recently made public that he is also NTSTS, so I can finally show you this tree I made using stylo back in 2014 of some fimfic authors:

Look closely at the darf / NTSTS entries:

If that's not definitive proof that they're the same person, I don't know what is.

What's that? What're my stories doing mixed in with darf's?

I have no idea. :trixieshiftleft:

Shit, now we're all Cold in Gardez and Bad Horse.

"darf recently made public that he is also NTSTS,"

I nearly screamed. I've been wondering what happened to that NTSTS fellow for years now. I just... wow. I feel like a great mystery in my mind has been solved. Of course I hadn't really known who darf is until now, or I may have put it together sooner. Complications, I say. Complications.

But who is John Colt?

You know it is terrifying how well that thing works. It not only clustered all my stories together, but also neatly separated my comedies from the non-comedies (Inaccuracy of Proverbs is an edge case, but it is sad before it is funny (sorta) for one line).

I wonder what it is about my writing that makes it so easy to cluster. Something about my Filthy Foreign Person nature?

Can I be Bad Horse, too?

D: Was I PresentPerfect this whole time? Or was he me? That would explain the initials and unnecessary emoticons....Who else am I?
Who are any of us?

4101968 bless you

I'll be no man's draft horse nor ask him to be a draft horse for me etc

This reminds me of when I used to randomly change my short bio to "Device Heretic Sees Your Sins" hoping someone would think I was him in disguise. I also think this would be fun to do with others but it also looks like

work.

Great. Now do Varanus and Device Heretic. :P

i knew you and Horizon were the same person. also everyone knows Biologic Orthodoxy (everything as it should be by nature) as Device Heretic (that which is made wrong against all), right? AS THO ANYONE IN THIS COMMUNITY IS FOOLING ANYONE.

YOU DERPS.

i was a derp. derping is fun. derp derp. :derpytongue2:

I... don't get how the graph works.

We all know we're all just SS&E alts, anyway.

4102216 If you follow the link on the word "stylo" in the post, it will take you to an earlier blog post that will explain basically what it does.

The dendrogram tree was made like this:

Procedure SPLIT:
1. Take a set of points in some space. (You can pretend it's a 3D space to make it easy to imagine.)
2. Use PCA to find the direction or line in that space on which the points are the most spread-out.
3. Cut the points into two equal-sized sets along that line. This division will be shown as a fork on the dendrogram.
4. (Recursively) SPLIT each of the two sets.

4102088 Oy me gosh! You're me from the future!

I think I get it now

Shit! We've been found out! Hello me, why did you do this?

Someone I don't know is someone else I don't know! I am more shocked that apparently Bad Horse is secretly several people I don't know.

Seriously, though, your habit of clustering around other people is a large part of why I'm leery of accepting Stylo as proof any two authors are the same.

Eh, I doubt I'll ever see anyone clustering around me. I'm not a member of any set that will have me as a member. :)

Ghost! You're alive! Well, for certain values of "alive." Mostly the deader ones.

You're always gonna be the "Terry Pratchett of ponyfic" to me. I wonder how Stylo would compare the two of you.

4102859 You might find something relevant in my blog post Stylometrics: Sir Terry Pratchett vs. GhostOfHeraclitus. Though you'll find more of a distance comparison in a later blog post, Factoring out Equestria & POV.

Stylo doesn't detect style; it detects vocabulary. In fact, it's based on programs that were designed to detect people who are trying to disguise their identity by changing their style. So writing like Pratchett doesn't mean you'll be clustered with Pratchett.

The biggest impact on stylo is the point-of-view of a story. Changing from first person to 3rd person makes it look to stylo like it was written by someone else. Tense also can do that. The country and year in which the writer was born are also big factors.

Professional writers always write in the same style and vocabulary, and nearly always using the same point of view, so their stories all cluster closely together in a stylo analysis. Many fan-fiction writers use much more varied points-of-view and vocabulary sets, especially (according to stylo) me.

Welp.

Thanks for the links, not sure how I missed them originally!

The last month-and-a-bit was... quite a thing. First I get deathly ill, then my computer breaks, then I get drowned in work.

So... for certain very specialized values of 'alive,' certainly.

Gosh,thanks.
