Another sleepless night. I am tired, torn, but... Excited? Today, husbando and I are signing the lease to a beautiful new home. On that, I am very happy. My heart still aches though. My family, my broken little family, has a fresh new crack. I hope the rift closes... Or at the least that someone busts out the super glue and mends the break.
As a way of staving off the depressing, I have cheated yet again to dip into my reading queue for my review series. So this is another unofficial review to go along with the one I did for Salvation, I guess?
Back Through the Mirror takes inspiration from the tabletop RPG called World of Darkness, specifically it's Changeling splat, which is about scary faeries. BTtM is about Twilight's return after being kidnapped by a faerie lord called the Librarian from the other world of Arcadia. She was transformed, inheriting new and strange abilities. Her escape and return to her world was not a happy one. Twi's been away a lot longer than she thinks...
The story hasn't updated in three years, and the author hasn't logged on in ages, but I hold out hope for the stubborn status that reads "incomplete" at the bottom. And 120k is nothing to sneeze at. So! I figured I'd give it a try.
I think the first half of the first chapter had the strongest visuals, and while the story is engaging and the descriptions further in still imaginative, it does lack a bit of oomph where it probably shouldn't. Sometimes it's outright telling instead of showing. Other times it's not really "telling" but it sure could be "showing" more. Still, the plot has pretty active pacing, the atmosphere feels spot on for World of Darkness (especially Changeling), and the ideas! What fun and nightmarish ideas in this fic. Even as tired as I am, I keep thinking: One more chapter. Just one more!
So... Er.... I unofficially recommend this fic? I really need to do another review episode...
