What kind of roles you see or include certain characters in (writing or concept-wise?) · 7:03pm Jul 3rd, 2016

I'm starting to notice I tend to put the mane six into certain roles whenever I write them into my stories or imagine new concepts. Here are some examples:

Applejack

Roles I tend to imagine her in: Isolation, Mare of Action, Combat

I seem to prefer to put Applejack into roles which make her the center of action or allow her to think herself out of a jam on her own. She's very independent in my mind (as in the show) but uses that independence in extreme ways, like fighting off monsters or solving problems with her strength.

Rarity

Roles I tend to imagine her in: Serious Drama, Secret Advisor, Intelligent Focuses

I see Rarity are far more intelligent than the show often showcases, though she has shown a large amount of creativity. I feel like if I were to write more serious mane six fics, Rarity would be the one who can handle more extreme problems closer to real life challenges.

Twilight Sparkle

Roles I tend to imagine her in: The Expert, Trusted Confident, Most Willing to Learn Something New

I tend to imagine Twilight as the character anyone can go to, even humans who might appear in Equestria. I see her as always interested in learning something new and less likely to judge. She's the expert who knows what others don't. So...pretty close to canon. :)

Fluttershy

Roles I tend to imagine her in: Living a Double Life, Looking for Opportunities to Be More Happy, Even More Fearful than She Lets On

I've always thought Fluttershy is the ultimate mascot of someone who wants to live a happier life with more involvement in the outside world, but is too scared to do so, so she often does things in secret in hopes that she'll learn more about herself and the world without worrying about judgement from her friends. Fluttershy is the closet-everything in my mind and perfect for slice of life or drama.

Rainbow Dash

Roles I tend to imagine her in: Sole Action Adventurer, Discoverer of Secret Things, Secretly Afraid of Being Rejected by Her Friends

Rainbow has had one of the largest arcs of change in my stories. She was in my first fic as a mare angry at Derpy for a mistake, then a science fiction action hero, then a mare with secret desires in the romance fic I wrote. She seems to fit so many things, but mostly i imagine she discovers secrets and is afraid of rejection.

Pinkie Pie

Roles I tend to imagine her in: Extremes of Emotion, Cheerleader who inspires others, sweetheart who looks out for others

Pinkie is a strange one in regards to my mental image of her. My immediate response to her is basically every canon trait she possesses, but the longer I develop her character for a concept, the more extreme her opposing sides of emotion become, and sometimes I even imagine her as a symbol of those trying to become happier selves, and not succeeding. I really adore writing Pinkie Pie, but it's tough to keep her happy sometimes.

How do you see the mane six or any other character when it comes to writing them into stories or forming concepts about them?

This seems pretty accurate in my book

Seems like a good breakdown of characters to me.
