since the mare in the moon is there, I'm gonna guess this could be a flashback story. some thing is going towards the moon, away from earth over the horizon. and some plea for it to not be the final one...

Vague, translucent birdlike figure flying "up" from our perspective (as opposed to "away")? Doesn't ring any bells, unfortunately. It could be some generic shadow beast, but at this point the Nightmare and her forces would be trapped on the moon.
Indistinct large fiery probable sphere behind the "tail" of the bird (as shown by the color of the lines over it's surface)? The sun, perhaps? If so, then where is the planet?
