I had a line of thought while I was out walking earlier which was partially motivated by The Dresden Files, Arthurian Legend, and Lord of the Rings.
Starswirl was/is depending on if he's still hanging around in a crystal cave (Merlin/DF), an exceptionally powerful wizard who mentored the rulers of the land (Merlin), preformed time/space magic the likes of which is unreproducible to current era casters (Dresden Files), fought monsters that used/fed off of dark magic (LotR), and had a swanky, fucking hat (LotR).
Considering his primary means of dealing with monsters was to throw them into another dimension where the inhabitants might be completely unprepared for them, we can assume he had a certain level of callousness to go with his power.
How much of a crater did he actually leave when he went out, because you don't get the monster hunting jobs if you're the kind of mage that dies peacefully in his sleep, and none of those examples I listed were nice people.
Well, there is horse shoe bay, and Celestia's modus operendi is rather clearly some sort of damnatio memoriae for anything 'non-nice' to avoid copy-cats in a world where 99.99% of the inhabitants are (defacto) mages of some sort...
Maybe it had another name for a century or so? 'Wizard's Last Hoof-print,' or thereabout, if you catch my drift.
