Orders of the Night Guard · 4:27am Sep 8th, 2012
The Night Guard is organized into several specialized groups, called “orders”, each tasked with a different set of responsibilities but all dedicated to the defense of the realm against supernatural threats.
Trackers – as their name very much implies Trackers roam Equestria searching for evidence of supernatural or preternatural phenomena that might require the intervention of the Night Guard; most travel in pairs so that one can remain to monitor the situation while the other returns to a Night Guard outpost to request reinforcement; although they will typically call in a Hunter-Killer squad to deal with a threat, all Trackers are fully-trained and competent fighters who are capable of fighting off minor threats without aid
Hunter-Killers – the bulk of Night Guards are Hunter-Killers who operate as individuals or in small squads of roughly half a dozen ponies; these skilled warriors are sent to slay threats to ponykind; sometimes multiple squads may be summoned to wipe out a particularly large concentration of monsters or daemons and on extreme occasions entire cohorts or even the full force of the Night Guard may be mobilized
Librarians – unicorns who show exceptional magical potential are not fielded as Trackers or Hunter-Killers but rather are inducted into the Librarians; these unicorns study the countless forbidden magicks that have been confiscated by the Night Guard over the years; they then develop counterspells and defensive wards to better combat these dark spells; only a handful are recruited to become Librarians because they must have the strength of character to resist corruption from their repeated exposure to malevolent magicks; although much of their time is invested in their research, when magic-based threats are too powerful for normal unicorn Night Guards to deal with, a Librarian may be summoned to provide their expertise; this is done only in dire emergencies as Librarians number so few that the loss of even one is considered a major blow to the Night Guard
Forgemasters – pegasus smiths, earthpony tinkerers, and unicorn craftsponies who hold the title of Forgemaster are responsible for producing and maintaining the various weapons and the armor of the Night Guard; most equipment fielded by the Night Guard is made from an alloy of silver, palladium, and cloud-iron and then engraved with runes of purity and layered with protective enchantments
Chroniclers – a veteran member of the Night Guard who is responsible for the upkeep of the Night Guard’s records and histories; the Chronicler writes of the battles fought, threats defeated, and nature of the monsters encountered by the Night Guard so that later generations may utilize the wisdom and knowledge to defend against such threats in the future; at any given time there is only a single Chronicler and a single apprentice who shall become the next Chronicler upon the previous one's death, whether in battle or in rare cases old age
