Launch of a New Project · 8:00pm Jun 1st, 2016

So, big announcement time.

About a year and a half ago, I wrote a blog about Jurassic Park, comparing and contrasting the book and the movie. It was a time-consuming undertaking that was very satisfying for me to put together, and it was always something I thought about revisiting in some form. The problem came down to the time-consuming element of it coupled with my dumb blog on a pony site not really being the right venue for such a thing. Since then I’ve been kicking around ideas for ways to do stuff like that blog again, in a different form that was better suited for the thing I wanted to do.

So for the past few months, I’ve been working on developing a youtube show. That show is Geek Books, presenting reviews of novels that could be called geek interest: science fiction, fantasy, horror, detective fiction, children’s novels, alternative history, young adult, noir, and a smattering of classics and general fiction. Geek culture is sort of nebulous, so the range of possible genres and styles that I’ll be covering will be similarly nebulous, but there should hopefully be a range that will have something for everyone. The first episode of Geek Books, a spoiler-free review of The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, is online now:

Geek Books Review – The Ocean at the End of the Lane – Part 1 (No Spoilers)

Part two of the review, which will have spoilers and go a bit more in-depth with the themes and ideas of the book, will go live in two weeks, and then next month will have a two-part review of a new title (which right now is shaping up to be The BFG by Roald Dahl).

I’m having a lot of fun putting this passion project together, and I’m jazzed to keep going with it. If it sounds like your cup of tea, please check it out. Also feedback would be super helpful, as there are some kinks to work out in the early going here. If it’s not your thing, no worries, as I said this is a passion project I’m still fiddling with, and one of the big, honking deal breakers I’ve had for myself on it is that it could not interfere with my writing. The only reason I’m launching it is because I haven’t had that problem, so if you’re of the opinion, “Yeah, bats, good for you, don’t care, when are you writing more horsekisses?” fret not, the horsekisses are forthcoming (got a chapter of Basil Bones in edits and everything). Plus, this announcement will likely be the first and last time I make a blog about this, unless there’s something I think has really specific ponefan interest to it, so fret not that my blog’s gonna devolve into a constant ‘hey, check out my shit you don’t care about!’ annoyance.

Anyway, any thoughts or comments about the first episode would be greatly appreciated. That’s all I got for now. TTFN.

Oh . . . right.

Whoa, that sounds pretty cool!

Here is my review of all Neil Gaiman books:

This book is by Neil Gaiman. You should probably read it.
