Episode Discussion » S6E10 - Applejack's Day Off · 5:19pm May 28th, 2016

Sorry I didn't get a chance to make the post today because I was at the hospital since I'm now a proper uncle :O

Anyway, APPLEJACK. PROGRAMMING PARALLELS.

Congrats Knighty!

For the first time in my life, an episode of MLP made me zone out...

Sorry I didn't get a chance to make the post today because I was at the hospital since I'm now a proper uncle :O

Recent uncle within the past year as well. Been babysitting him a lot as well. Is fun.

Grats.

Congrats, unclehood is fun

3979107 Cool. I'm an uncle myself.

3979099 Uh . . . What? :rainbowhuh:

Cheers to being an uncle M8. Is it a boy or girl?"

I really enjoyed this episode being the somewhat workaholic in my spirit. It was heartwarming to see friendly antics and a nice relaxing day with world building and no disasters like normal.

(World building being most of what happens on Sweet Apple Acres.)

3979112 I don't know. I just zoned out, and I have nothing to say about the episode...

Congrats man:pinkiehappy:

I think this is the first time ever I've seen Applejack have a Brain Blast; or something related to it:moustache:

I became an uncle like a year ago.

I''m dreading when she learns to speak...

3979114 Okie dokie loki. :pinkiehappy:

Applejack, stuck in an impractical routine because she knows that's what works? I don't think I've related to AJ so much for the entire run of the series. :applejackconfused:

This episode resonated with me on so many levels. Not only was it funny and clever, but the aspect of the routine and how some people (particularly those on the Autistic Spectrum) get complacent with it was actually very insightful. Yes, some could say it's just an "Oh, Applejack should stop being so stubborn" episode, but if you do enough digging, there's an extra layer to this that can open up so many aspects of AJ's character that we haven't really seen before. I, for one, can always appreciate that. :ajsmug:

Also, looks like Rainbow Dash has found a new guilty pleasure. They grow up so fast. :rainbowkiss:

3979107
Same.

Also, knighty, you didn't miss anything. There was maybe two minutes of content in the entire episode.
So enjoy your time with your new nibling.

Well, this was an okay episode as far as things go. The problem is that I feel like they missed a huge opportunity of making Applejack go insane while she's trying to relax. For most of the episode, it's just stuff happening. The scene of Applejack investigating and working on those pipes felt way too dragged out and went on longer than they should have. Rarity, Twilight, and Spike don't do anything until the final act of the episode. The moral itself feels like it had no real buildup to it, and feels like it was inserted in at the last moment.

At times, it has some nice moments like the character arc for Applejack, or how Rainbow was trying to play it cool about the spa treatments. The problem though is that this episode has little energy in it and it's just stuff happening. There's really not much happening until the last act where Applejack learns to break that old habit of hers about fixing problems that aren't there.

Considering the person who came up with this story was Neal Dusedau, this is better than his first two episodes, but it still suffers some problems from the first two episodes he came up with and wrote. It still has sluggish pacing and some pretty big plot holes in it. At least though there was some explanation about some of these plot holes unlike Princess Spike which was one giant idiot plot. It's not a bad episode at all, but this was a rather weak Applejack centered episode.

On another note, congratulations, Knighty!

Kind of a meh episode to me. It was not bad but it was not good either. The lesson was good but aside from a few gags, it just wasn't a very entertaining episode. :unsuresweetie:

Oh well, can't wait for the next one.:pinkiehappy:

3979126 This episode should resonate with a lot of people. Especially the writers on this website.

It's one of the reasons people use editors right? Helping people catch inefficiency and/or mistakes like what Applejack had to deal with because that's how she's always done it.

I'm getting really, really, really sick and tired of these Rarity and Applejack episode pairings. All they do is just play up "Look how opposite they are!" and it's really way too overdone in the series at this point. I mean we're into Season 6, and there still is no Rarity and Twilight episode.

3979119 Yeah, I'm in the same situation with my niece. When she starts learning how to speak, I'm going to have to be very careful on what I say.

3979138 I'm wondering when we'll see Fluttershy and Rarity team up episodes again. Seriously, the last one I think was all the way back in season 2 with Putting Your Hoof Down.

knighty has a noble! :D

Congratulations on becoming an uncle. And don't worry, Knighty, you didn't miss much.

By the way, was the Spoiled Rich at the front of the line for the steam room? I think it was because I had like a strong urge to bitch smack her.

3979142
Well, I guess you could kind of count Filli Vanilli depending on your point of view, despite being more of a Fluttershy solo episode, I feel like Rarity had a big enough role in it.

Personally, I just feel at this point in the show, any Rarity episode pairing with any other Mane 6 would be better than another Rarity/Applejack thing. It's too overused, and personally, I feel Rarity works better with the other ponies. (Except for Twilight, because how would we know from the show as again, not a single episode between them. It's a little disappointing to me.)

I am however glad that there's that upcoming Pinkie and Rarity episode.

3979138 I'm still waiting for a Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy episode, which has never been done :fluttershyouch: Oh, and congrats, Knighty!

3979149 Yep, that was her. I'd recognize that turned-up snooty-looking nose anywhere. :twistnerd:

3979156 I'm still wondering how her current relationship with Diamond is right now.

3979155 Right, that hasn't been done either! That's another one we're waiting on. Well fortunately there's still 13 unknown episodes in the series, one can hope one of them is Pinkie and Fluttershy, or Rarity and Twilight. Though personally I'm most hopeful for one more Rarity solo song.:raritystarry:

Wherein Unicorn Master Race shows Applejack how to farm better.

3979164 I hope so too. Applejack needs to get the heck off her farm. There is more to explore, my freckled child!

3979172 Anything beyond the farm is an illusion put in place by robot overlords.

That explains.

Congratulations, though!

Congratulations. I have been an uncle myself for now five years.

What a dull episode. There was no real humour, other than Rainbow Dash showing a girlie side, a joke we've seen before.

What we haven't seen before though, is Applejack being so finicky about sticking to an over elaborate routine when quite clearly it would be far more efficient to simplify things (the Zap Apple ritual is different in that it actually WORKS), something that feels as out of character as her over-protectiveness of Apple Bloom in Somepony To Watch Over Me. It feels that trait was shoe-horned in here just to compliment the half-baked moral. It doesn't do the screenplay writers any favours when they appear to be making up stuff as they go along.

Aside from that, Twilight's appearance feels nothing more than arbitrary, Spike is similiarly left with little to do (and what's with his obsession with pies?) and, I may get butchered for this, but I starting to suffer from as much Rarity overkill as I did during season 5 when she had three episodes in a row. There was nothing to distinguish this 22 minute episode in any way, other than Spoiled Rich's enjoyable little role. "She lives in a mansion, you know." :ajbemused:

It might have been more amusing if the rest of the Apple clan had stuck around to help out or hinder, but I guess we'll never know. (So, all three of them have gone to market on the same day? Nice excuse to get them out of the picture, scripters) All in all, I can say this is a thoroughly unengaging episode I don't plan to revisit anytime soon. Let's hope the last two before the hiatus are an improvement.

Oh, and that weaksauce Twilight Mission Impossible gag? My vote for worst reference of the season so far. 2/5

In my opinion I think this is the best episode AJ could ask for. And I kind of liked it better than last week's episode. I would even call this epsode deep. We do need an outside eye to point what is wrong. Sometimes they do get a runt, and do extra steps even if it's unnecessary. In conclusion work smarter not harder.

Isseus #34 · May 28th, 2016 · · 20 ·

I'm just happy that two upper-middle class Master Race ponies could show the Mudpony hick how to do her work properly. Because she's dumb because she's a farmer. And probably smells.

A thoroughly boring episode with the worst pacing and laziest moral I could imagine. This is the second episode from these writers and the first one (Gift of Maud Pie) was just as boring and oddly paced. These feel like they belong in IDW's Friends Forever comics, not the show proper.

Has no one noticed that Applejack and a background pony cussed in the new episode???

Been an uncle for the past 14 nearly 15 years (14 yo niece, 12 yo nephew, 5 yo nephew respectively) so I can say it is a great feeling.

I think it says a LOT for the nondescriptness of Applejack's 'Day' Off when there's far more discussion of the moderator's new nephew/niece on this thread, than there is for the episode it's supposed to be about. :rainbowlaugh:

Man, this episode bored the hell out of me.

3979153
Seems like there's been a number of Rarity/Pinkie episodes though.

3979220
I agree. I like Rarity, but so much of Season 5 and now Season 6 has focused on her. Even though this isn't the Applejack episode we wanted, it's better than no Applejack episode.

Dreadnought

3979164

there's still 13 unknown episodes

So Season 7 is a no go?

Well, first off. Congrats on your new squire! :pinkiehappy: I'm willing to be the sales of pony plushies are about to skyrocket. :raritywink:

And now a bit about today's episode.
First the good stuff. The animation this episode looked really well done. Um, yeah... that's all I got.
Moving on.
Okay, the bit about Applejack being compelled to fix the Spa's problems was totally believable, and in line with how AJ behaves. But on the other hoof, the whole 'making chores harder than they need to be' routine she was going through seemed a bit contrived. Being originally from a farm myself I can tell you that no one makes any of the chores any harder than they have to be. And if someone else finds a faster way to get them done, they won't hesitate to tell you. I imagine if Big Mac had seen AJ clucking around the pigpen he'd have stopped plowing long enough to go swat her with her own hat. Now if Twilight or Rarity had shown her a more 'modern' and efficient way to do the same things she had been doing, it would have seemed a more reasonable premise. Had they not been trying to generate a somewhat shaky 'moral of the story' type episode, they could have had AJ get to the spa, relax, and say "maybe you're right Rarity, Twilight can handle things for just one day." And then cut back to the farm for tornado's, stampedes, and a timber wolf attack, that Twilight and Spike would have to frantically clean up after before AJ gets home, otherwise she'd never take a day off again.:facehoof:
Let's see, what else. Rainbow Dash pampering herself is cool. Rainbow Dash getting self conscious around Rarity and Applejack? No. Once again, a bit contrived.
I mean, if if she didn't have any problem with a whole spa full of strangers seeing her there, then why would she worry about two of her best friends? I mean they would be the least likely ponies to judge. And of her six best friends the one most likely to have said anything was there for the same reason, so it's not like her and AJ wouldn't have been on an even keel.
Oh, and Twilight Sparkle. Is she under contract this season to roll her eyes in every episode she appears in? Just saying.
And finally, not to beat a dead hor-, {Ahem}. I mean not to belabor the point, but we are ten episodes in, and still no Discord. Ten episodes man! I need my pony prozac!:pinkiecrazy:

3979267 ...And you've got yet ANOTHER one to look forward to again in a couple of weeks. This time , they're pairing her up with Pinkie Pie. Never mind... It's not like this has been already once this season, just a few short episodes ago, is it? Set your calendar now... :moustache:

Yeah not gonna lie this whol episode felt more like a filler than it should have. I mean some of it was kind of funny with Rainbow at the spa, though I thought that little cat was out of the bag a while back, while I agree with others that the whole notion of AJ making things harder than they need to be seems out of character.

Granted that worked in season 1 where she stubbornly refused help, but this is season 6 and by now you'd figure she'd know not to do something like that. Honestly, I feel like they should try to come up with some kind of storyline for AJ. I mean make episodes that finally address her whole lack of Parents. That would certainly be compelling and interesting.

Also I feel we've overstaturated on Rarity. It's become like the problem with Twilight people had in season one where she was crammed into episodes she didn't need to be in.

This felt like the "Appalosa's Most Wanted" episode of this season, seemingly back tracking with poor character choices. Didn't hate it but it felt pretty weak

Everyone laughed all the way when it premiered at the Bronyfest panel. There are a few gripes I and a few others found out (the person next to me raise his palms up in a "what?" kind of fashion during the second montage). Seriously, if you live on a farm your whole life, you may have found other ways to improve your work flow (and why the fear of pigs?).

The VA panel I attended right after was much more hilarious.

3979253 That sums it up pretty much.

Comment posted by heartbrokenpariah deleted May 28th, 2016

3979285 What the heck was Tabitha going on about on Twitter for the last couple days? Since you attended that panel at which she sprung the big reveal :raritywink:

3979285 I've been to a few Adam Sandler films in the cinema where I've giggled along with the audience all the way through, only to discover the horrible truth that when I watched them at home solo, later on (totally legally, of course) that they weren't... Well, very good. It's a form of subliminal peer pressure, ya know.

Why else do you think Two And Half Men lasted for so long? Charlie Sheen's dubious appeal? The cute kid who grew up to be not-so-cute? The absence of anything better for the network to fill the slot? WRONG ON ALL FRONTS. It's called... The laugh track. Without it, we wouldn't have known when to laugh, because there were barely any jokes to speak of. We hear the chuckling in the background, and it's only a matter of time before we give in to our instincts. ANOTHER POOP JOKE!!! HAHAHA!!! *Ahem*

So, I wouldn't let the audience at the fest decide your opinion. They were probably excited to be there, seeing an episode before it's official premiere... It must have been a pretty exhilarating experience. Of course, once I'd gotten home , saw it again and realised they'd in all likelihood picked the weakest episode of the season to screen, I wouldn't feel so jolly. I might feel somewhat cheated, actually. But hey, hindsight is a wonderful thing... Yes? :unsuresweetie:
