My Thoughts: Nosferatu · 4:47pm May 15th, 2016

A surprisingly OK movie.

Not meant as an insult, but you can definitely tell that this sucker (:trollestia:) was made 96 years ago. A glacial pace, unnecessary repetition, quite a few scenes that made me roll my eyes because I got it five second in but they went on for fifty, unnecessary repetition and...

Fuck me, that abomination against music they called a soundtrack. The words 'grating' and 'repetitive' barely does it justice. Hands down the worst movie music I've ever personally heard. :raritydespair:

Granted, I do get that it was a tech limitation on how much music you could realistically have for a movie since you needed either gramophone records or a live orchestra back then, but that didn't stop my personal annoyance. If it wasn't for watching it with my grandma I would have hit the mute button.

Still, I do genuinely see why its name is still spoken. There were some use of shadows and light that still look very striking (predating light sensitive film, nonetheless), some remarkable acting talent on screen, and Max Schreck just nailed playing Count Dracula Orlak. The dude never moves at more then at most a brisk walk, but you can just feel the menece dripping of screen as soon as he's visible.

So highly recommended, just beware that it's a movie you need to show patience to get to the good bits.

Oh, and since the thing is in the public domain, I can actually for once do this:

Enjoy! :pinkiehappy:

This vampire is not Alucard.

This vampire is therefore a disgrace to vampire-kind.

Alucard does not approve of this vampire.

Nosferatu is much more closer to original folk tales than this Japan-made rendition of metropolitan vampire. :trollestia:

I wonder how many gigabytes of Fluttershy pics you dug through for the Dark Horse. :derpytongue2:

Actually, since I frequently do crawls through Derpiboroo 'just' for inspiration, reference and to find those author's comment pics, I'm fairly certain I'm technically at the low terabyte mark by now. :pinkiecrazy:

Impressive.
Plus you are regularly churn out 150k words texts that become 20k after editing.
Are you Element of Diligence, son? :twilightblush:

I wish.

Alas, its 'just' the joys of keeping yourself entertained during long-term unemployment mixed with a mild perfectionist streak and a verbose writing style. :ajsleepy:

'Element of Diligence' does have a nice ring to it, though. :raritystarry:

The first time I've heard of Nosferatu was in a Spongebob short.
Then it was a pony fanfic.
Then I ended up in Doctor Adorable's Sing Along blog somehow,
so what do I know?

Honestly can't remember where i heard the name the first time.

I want to say in Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption, but I'm probably wrong. Think that was the first time I heard it in more then passing and in English, though.

Incidentally, it is the original source of the idea that vampires burn in the sun. Nosferatu needed a way to kill the vampire that wasn't Dracula's method of a Bowie knife to the heart. They decided to have the final scene be Orlock getting incinerated by the morning sun (come to vanquish this terrible night) and vampires have had a massive sunlight allergy ever since.

Also, "Schreck" means "scare," which is just funny.
