Clobbering ponies with the rainbow of friendship, generated from either amulets or indwellng harmony power, has been done enough times at enough critical junctions that I'm not sure how often they can keep doing it without people calling them out even more on the rehash.
And the black fact is that you can probably sell more toys by redesigning the whole character than by using the same character model with a new accessory. Possibly the original "amulet" idea was intended to leave the door open for full-size wearable merch, but when that failed to materialize, along with so many other slow pitches the toy department got (it seriously took them until AFTER THE LIBRARY WAS DESTROYED to come out with a remotely proper library play set) I guess they just decided to concentrate on their core brand, to wit, horrible dolls with ridiculous hair.

3913158 I don't really mind them getting rid of the Elements. It's the replacing them with something else and never using that new thing that bugs me. I'd love to see the sales figures on the new Rainbow Power ponies. My gut says they didn't do that well comparatively, and that's one of the reasons we've never seen it again. However, I have nothing to base that off of, so I'm probably wrong.
But still, how awesome would an episode or two have been with the girls exploring the morality of using the magic of friendship to smite enemies? I'd have loved to see them put them away because of the weird contradiction it creates.
