Original Story: To Catch A Falling Star

By Emma Lee Downs (LyraAlluse)

Once long ago on the world Tamerine there lived a young girl. The girl dreamed of going on grand adventures to find a star to hold in the palm of her hand. She would often speak of this to the other children of her village but they would only laugh at her words.

One boy had said, “You can’t catch a star in your hands. They are too far away.”

Another boy had piped in, “Yeah! You have your head in the clouds. You should pull it back down before you get it stuck up there forever!”

The girl ignored their words. No matter what the other children said, the girl believed that one day she could bring home a star to love and care for. Before her father’s death, he had told her to reach for the stars. She was not quite sure what her father had meant, but being a young girl of ten years old she assumed that it had something to do with catching a falling star.

One day she decided to set out on a quest to find one. Before she left on her great journey, her mother packed her a satchel of food and buttoned up her wool coat. After a warm embrace she gave her daughter some words of wisdom.

“Reach for the stars, never look back, keep following your destined path. Reach for the stars, and you will see, there is no goal you can’t achieve.”

The girl smiled and promised her mother that she would never give up before leaving her modest home to set out on his journey.

After five days of travel the girl became very hungry. She noticed that her food supply was running thin as she stopped to camp in a small forest for the night. Just as she was beginning to wonder where she could find more food the girl came upon two tribes.

The first tribe wore black and adorned themselves with feathers. The girl noticed that they carried some barrels of food with them on their horses and she felt her mouth water with hunger.

The tribe’s leader came fourth and said to the girl, “We are the Ratha Tribe. Follow us and you can have anything you desire. However we do not believe in foolish things. We have a simple life and do not go off on adventures. We believe life is more fulfilling that way. Dreams can’t come true anyway.”

Before the girl could say anything in response the leader of the second tribe came forward. The second tribe was adorned in fine jewels and wore clothing of many different colors. The chief had a big smile on his face as he spoke these words to the girl, “We are the Geda Tribe. Follow us and you can have everything you’ve ever wanted. However it will require a lot of hard work. We believe in following our dreams. To reach our goals there are many challenges that we must face. But once we overcome those challenges we can reach anything we desire; even the stars.”

The Ratha Tribe scowled at the Geda Tribe’s words and threw some insults in their direction. The Geda Tribe retaliated with a few insults of their own. The two tribes fought for what seemed like an eternity around the girl until she became so confused she was not sure which tribe to follow.

But then she remembered the words her mother had said before she had set out on her journey and she said them out loud. Both tribes refrained from speaking and listened intently as the girl began to speak.

“Reach for the stars, never look back, keep following your destined path. Reach for the stars, and you will see, there is no goal you can’t achieve.”

The Ratha Tribe scoffed at the girl’s words while the Geda Tribe cheered her on. Since the Ratha Tribe was respectful of the wise words her mother had spoken over her before she left on her journey, she knew that that were the tribe that she needed to follow. So she ignored the Ratha Tribe and journeyed with the Geda Tribe to the Land of Stars.

But even though she had the Geda Tribe to guide her, there were many challenges she had to face. Once she had to help a little girl of the Geda Tribe that had become stuck in a tree after a flooding of their camp. Fortunately she had always been a good climber and was able to rescue the girl without much difficulty. The chief had been very pleased by this and had made her an honorary member of their tribe. He dressed her in their clothes from that day forward and gave her the name of Kala which meant brave explorer in their tongue. She was called by the name of Kala so many times that after traveling for a few years with the Geda she forgot her old name.

A few years later when Kala was thirteen years old she was teased by a Ratha tribeswoman they encountered on the path so bad that he almost gave up his quest all together. But she remembered the words her mother had told her those many years ago and ignored the words the woman spoke over her. She had learned by then that the Ratha were a very foolish people indeed. They only believed what they could see. They never tried to understand the mysteries of the world. Because of this, the Ratha were jealous of people who were different than them and were always showed anger towards anyone who dared to follow their dreams.

Somehow Kala always made it through each challenge she encountered. Her courage and faith helped her get through the hardest of times. Her bravery earned her a great deal of respect within the Geda Tribe. Many years later after traveling to what seemed to be the edge of the world, Kala finally reach the Land of the Stars. She was twenty then and had forgotten all about her old town where she had grown up. The only thing she remembered from those days was the words of her mother which had gotten her through the most difficult of times during her travels.

The Land of Stars was a place that the Geda Tribe had visited many times. But they had never stayed long. So after camping for some time and making sure that Kala had all of the supplies she would need to journey across the land on her own, the Geda Tribe departed. The chief wished her the best of luck and waved goodbye as Kala said her final goodbyes to everyone in the tribe and journeyed deeper into the land than anyone had ever gone.

She journeyed for what seemed like an eternity. The air around her became thick and dark. The only thing she could see around her was the faint flickering of lights that looked a bit like fireflies. It was impossible to know where she was going, but she kept walking forward. She kept on this way until she reached something that looked like a flight of golden stairs. She thought it was odd to find such a thing out in the middle of nowhere but it occurred to her that the staircase must be there for a reason. So she climbed them.

The staircase went round and round. The thick dark air was still around her, the firefly like creatures were still lit up all around her. The fog only started to lift as she got to the stop of the staircase. At the top there was a great garden. The sky seemed frozen in a permanent sunset. When she looked below she saw that all of the darkness and star-like creatures were beneath the platform. When she glanced back up she saw a young man dressed in silver standing at the base of a grand temple. The temple was situated in the center of the garden. Kala smiled at the young man and bowed in respect because she knew that it was the star she had been journeying so long to find.

Kala saw the star smile and it was love at first sight. She climbed to the top of the temple and took the young man’s hand in her own. The star reached out and touched her face and she felt all her troubles melt away. Her quest had finally come to an end.

It is said that Kala married the star and together they built a grand palace of gold in a far off galaxy. From that day on, as is expected, the star prince and the maiden lived happily ever after. The legend of the girl spread throughout the galaxy and was told by many different tribes on many different worlds.

It is said that the girl’s legacy lives on in the stars to this very day. If you look up to the night sky you will see two stars shinning bright over the horizon. Those stars are the maiden and the star prince living happily in their palace of gold at the edge of the galaxy.

Interesting. Very few mistakes, kind of reads like either an old legend or a children's story.
