Miss Koi's Collab Review on "The Gift of Maud Pie" · 12:51am Apr 3rd, 2016

Missy: Greetings Everypony, readers, and MLP fans alike!:D Missy is back with another Season 6 episode review, but with some guests on her channel:) You’ve probably seen them in my other collab reviews, but I figured since this was a three mare focused episode, why not have three mares review it?;) They’re the two Pie sisters in this scenario, and I’m the Rarity;) Please give a warm welcome to KidatHeart5 and CartoonNerd12!<3 Thanks for coming you guys, let’s start off with general impressions of the episode and individual scores for the episode. Since, you’re my guests, you guys get to go first:)
KidatHeart5: You know, I was thinking the same thing with the three character thing. It’s uncanny that there would be two sisters and a friend in an episode and CartoonNerd12 and I are the Pie sisters. By the way, I think I’d be Pinkie Pie. So anyway, the episode wasn’t too bad. I mean, it had its good points and it had a great twist on the “Gift of the Magi” story. I think my score would be an 8. What say you, sis?
CartoonNerd12: Well, my first impression of the episode is that I couldn’t help but think this story should have taken place in a Friends Forever comic issue and it remind me of last season’s episode, Rarity Investigates. But I will admit, there were some highlights involving Maud and I totally gawked when I saw Rarity imitating Pinkie that remind me of the Lost Treasure of Griffonstone when Rainbow was imitating Twilight. It’s official, at this point of their friendship they’re rubbing off of each other, so to me, this was also an 8.
K5: Who is the better Twilight imitator? Rainbow or Discord? Okay, he had a wig on. He didn’t necessarily imitate her, per se.
CN12: Again with Discord?!
K5: :twilightsheepish: So what about you, Missy? What did you think of the episode?
Missy: Haha lol, well I absolutely adore this episode:D This is probably my favorite episode of the season so far!:D I know I shouldn’t be claiming something like this at the beginning of the season, I’m mean, it’s the third episode for crying out loud!XD It’s suppose to be either just okay or pretty good, not completely amazing:D Most likely, other episodes this season will take this spot as the season progresses *cough cough* the two parter Discord episode *cough cough*. Yeah, that’s right CN;) I’m annoying Discord fangirl like your sis;)
K5: The episode thing is because of Maud, isn’t it?
Missy: THAT, and mostly the relationship between Pinkie and Maud because of their sisterly bond is my favorite sibling bond/favorite family bond in the entire show:3 <3 So, I was biased from the start and probably given this episode a high rating from the start. Speaking of my rating, I definitely give this episode 10 hearts out of 10 <3
K5: We speak from sisterly experience, don’t we, sis?
CN12: We most certainly do, in fact most of the episode involving the sisters reminds me of our relationship. Maud is the calming force and is protective like me and would do anything to make her sister happy.
K5: I’m the more excitable one like Pinkie. I would also do whatever it takes to see my sister be happy.
Missy: Daww that’s so sweet:3 Says the only child watching this take place from afar, lol;)
CN12: Well, it’s not perfect, it can be trying, just like the discussion Maud and Pinkie had over the gift-exchanging tradition.
K5: It’s very hard to pronounce the acronym for the tradition.
Missy: Tehee, it’s Pinkie Pie what did you expect?;) In terms of CartoonNerd said, I agree. I mean, if Frozen ever taught us anything, it’s that sisterhood is not easy. Especially with sisters that are complete polar opposites from each other;) I guess the reason why I like Maud & Pinkie and Elsa & Anna so much is that I simply love polar opposites that complete and compliment one another in a very loving manner. Hmm, remind you of a certain couple we know?;) *cough* Fluttercord *cough*. Oh man, this tickle in my throat I swear;)
CN12: Aw, I hope you get better. But speaking of polar opposites, that’s how our mother sees us, we’re quite similar in some things but we’re different with everything else.
K5: No duh. Anyway, I would like to say some things about the episode. Firstly, there’s the floor keyboard at the toy shop. It reminds me of the Washington Pavilion I went to sometimes. It was also nice that the stallion and filly on the keyboard played the MLP theme song. I also want to point out that I absolutely adore the gems and necklaces at the jewelry store! Okay, brace yourselves, because my next point of interest involves tears. There were tears of joy in the episode, but they were unshed. Pinkie also sobbed into the ice cream sundae, which makes me suspect a theme this season involving the kind of crying. It makes me think of a certain character who might do it this season *cough* Discord *cough*. Missy, you must be contagious, either for the tickle in the throat or that we’re targeting Discord all of a sudden.
Missy: No way! If anything, you started it by mentioning Discord first;) If anything, you caused the tickle in the throat bug that floating around, lol!XD Oh man, if Discord does cry into a sundae, my heart would just break and I would avoid ice cream for away:( MOM, I CAN’T EAT AWAY MY FEELS BECAUSE ICE CREAM IS MY ENEMY!X0 As for the floor keyboard at the toy shop, I felt like that was a reference to Fao Schwarz toy store, have you guys heard of it? Anyway, it was this giant toy shore that use to be all over the country, but then some years ago, had to close down some of it’s shops:( Including in my neck of the woods:( It was my favorite toy store when I was little because it was so huge, and I use to love playing on that floor keyboard. Luckily, we still have Fao Schwarz in New York, but still I miss the one in my neck of the woods:( Anyway, I think this scene is also a reference to the movie “Big” when Tom Hanks and the older boss played a song together on the floor keyboard. I loved that scene so much and the movie because of all the scenes at Fao Schwarz<3 Tehee I just simply loved it when Pinkie slid on the floor keyboard and ruined the My Little Pony theme song that was going on in that scene;) As for the jewelry store, did anyone catch how Rarity was dressed up as Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany’s?:3 I think the store they were at was Tiffany’s:3
K5: No kidding! That was a reference?! Who knew?!
CN12: Well we didn’t. You know at first, I wasn’t as excited for the episode because we were going back to Manehattan, I admire the world-building but it would be nice to go someplace we haven’t seen yet like Las Pegasus.
K5: Funny you should mention that. There’s a new banner on the Facebook page for MLP and the background shows something new. Do you suppose it involves a racetrack thing? Comments on Equestria Daily suggest it’s Las Pegasus.
Missy: Yeah, I did saw that:) No doubt about it, we are going to see Las Pegasus this season and I cannot wait to see it:) But I feel ya Cartoon, sometimes it gets too repetitive going to these kind of places more than once. However, in this episode, they did a good job going to new places like the Ice Ring by Rockefeller Center (Maud is best ice skater;)), the Pony version of Statute of Liberty ( I wonder what the ponies call her anyway), roof top high restaurants, Central Park, and even super small apartments that are about the size of actual New York apartments XD Lol!XD
CN12: Yeah those were a plus mainly because I saw them when I went to New York at one point :)
Missy: What a coincidence!:D I’ve visited New York too:D How did you enjoy your visit? I absolutely loved my trip to New York, so magical and so wonderful *starry eyed* Don’t know if I want to live there, but I certainly love visiting it and visiting it so more:) Speaking of New York and their New Yorkers, did these Manehattan ponies seem to pay too much attention to Pinkie Pie? I mean, New Yorkers are use to strange and unusual people. So use to it that they just completely ignore them. But these Manehattan ponies didn’t. Do you think it was because there’s not a lot of ponies living in Manehattan in comparison to actual New York city?
CN12: My visit was just as amazing, short, but amazing. And yes, a lot of fans think so too that Manehattan and New York are very different given they’re supposed to be alike.
Missy: Question for both of you: Did you any of you expect that Pinkie Pie was going to give up her one and only party canon?:0 I mean, I had a feeling that Pinkie had to make some kind of sacrifice, but I don’t know that her party cannon was going to become her object of sacrifice:0 I mean, it’s just unthinkable:0 I mean, the joke of her party cannon popping up everywhere in this episode become relevant later in the episode:0 Daww Pinkie loves Maud soooo much:3
K5: I knew the party cannon was a running gag, but you make a good point about it being relevant in the story.
CN12: I thought so too, at first it seemed like overkill for the cannon but then that scene… wow. And by the way, I checked the credits and that pony was listed as Pouch Pony, I didn’t know if that was his actual name or not, but i like to have use for him in future fanfictions.
K5: You serious? He’s basically a one-shot character, barely villain material.
Missy: I guess the writers are catching on that the fandom will name all these characters, whether they like it or not;) In other words, they did it for us;)
K5: Oh, and did you know that the writers were brothers?! That’s right! Brothers! This adds a whole new level to the sibling relationships. Oh, I bet it’s another theme for this season! We know Fluttershy’s brother is going to show up, but what about other surprise characters? That’d be interesting to see.
Missy: That explains why this episode did such a great job writing the sibling dynamic and humor of the episode:) But that’s another great theory too, some more surprise characters might be a fun addition to season as a whole much like Season 5.
CN12: I believe family is the focus because in the premiere we have Twilight becoming an aunt and we finally hear her parents’ voices!
K5: Hey, I brought that up in my last review!
Missy: Haha lol!;) :D Any last concluding thoughts before we close up this review?
K5: Not really. Just the fact that this is a great episode and I hope there’s more epic things to come. What say you, CN12?
CN12: Just that Rarity is expanding her shop is mega-awesome, it shows that the girls are gaining their destinies like Twilight did, Fluttershy’s is hard to say… but I have one theory, since her destiny is animal-related and there’s a certain spirit who has qualities of animals…
K5: And I know of a Mane Six member who might be about to fulfill her dreams…;)
Missy: Sorry Kiddo, no spoilers yet about that episode until we get closer to it’s premier date;) I want to respect my watchers who are not into early spoilers. As to CN, your subtle Fluttercord reference is soooo subtle;) Well, here are my concluding thoughts: I love the heart and emotion brought into the relationship between Pinkie Pie and Maud, Maud’s sense of humor is top notched in this episode and it’s not all rock jokes but rather mixed in with all kinds of dry humor, Rarity was great in this episode as well bringing in her own humor and bouncing off both Maud & Pinkie extremely well, the references were great, the pacing well done, AND...we got our first song of the season technically;) It’s my favorite song of the season so far:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7tiZGNjgdI
It’s funny, this scene/song remind me of my own story “The Mare Who Became Queen” because there’s a moment in the story where Maud and Pinkie sing a very funny song together much in a manner similar to how this song did it:D Yay reference to my own story even though it wasn’t intentional by the writers!:D LOLXD Anyway, I have a feeling a certain writer named AM Shark is really going to like this episode;) Hi Sharkie!:D Anyway, thank you so much you guys for reviewing this episode with me:) It was lots of fun!
K5: No problem! Call us again when you want to do another one!
CN12: Ditto.

*Chuckles* Well, the Shark finally got around to seeing this episode, and I have to say, Missy you were right on the money. I loved this episode. “Maud Pie” started my love for the bond between these two sisters, (and “Make New Friends but Keep Discord” gave some more fun little moments between them), and watching them in this episode only deepened it. I will never get tired of watching Pinkie’s over-the-top enthusiasm contrast with Maud’s reserved monotone.

The whole getting together to go places and swap gifts reminded me so much of the outings and/or visits my sister and I try to do together once a week. And Maud noticing the rock-relating stuff really cracked me up since it reminded me of my own experiences studying things like concrete design, soil mechanics. I kept watching her and thinking "Oh, if this was architecture instead of rocks, that'd totally be me."

The gift-swapping also hit a note with me since a few Sundays ago, my sister took me out to eat for my birthday and that same day I bought her a vacuum for her birthday. (*Chuckles* No, we do not have the same birth date and we were not born in that particular month. My family are masters of shifting our birthday celebrations to whenever day is the most convenient rather than trying to celebrate them on the actual dates.)

I also really liked how Rarity fit in with the two sisters, and her trying to help Pinkie.

Thanks both for the informative and entertaining review, and for the little callout you gave me.
