Quick Thoughts about Starlight Glimmer · 10:56pm Mar 29th, 2016

Ok so let me make this clear right off the bat. Starlight Glimmer as a character is alright, but I don't like her for what she represents. She may be Twilight's "pupil", but it's been shown that shown that she is essentially Twilight's equal in terms of magical power. A potential rival. You know who also filled that role? Trixie.

She may have not been as strong as Twilight in the beginning, but in Magic Duel we've seen her cast an Aging Spell, one of a high level that even surprises Twilight. That means Trixie's magic isn't all for show when it comes to her knowledge of it. Speaking of Trixie, remember when her last episode was? Let me tell you.

It's been more than THREE YEARS since then. Here's a picture to clarify the situation she's in.

I feel BAD for her. Last time we left off, Trixie failed to get revenge on Twilight, felt bad about it, helped her please the foreign delegates from Saddle Arabia, and then finally ran away from town, possibly to rethink her whole life. Clearly this isn't the last time we'll see Trixie, or so we thought. Fast forwarding to the debut of Starlight Glimmer and the Season 5 premiere, I've noticed that she and Trixie shared quite a bit of common elements with each other while watching the episodes.

For one, both can be pretty deceitful. Both were shown to be are well practiced in the art of magic. And also both proved to find it difficult to make friends with others.

I honestly thought that Trixie could have easily fulfilled Starlight Glimmer's role, albeit with slightly different motivations and goals. While I'm sure Trixie wouldn't try being a dictator over a town again, she probably would have tried something similar like a group following of sorts in order to make friends, but that somehow goes wrong like they all go evil cultish or something. Probably involve a different antagonist or something.

I don't know really. I'm probably pretty wrong about the last point, but I feel frustrated that Trixie hasn't been shown again. As a character she still has a lot of growth left to accomplish. She just needs that opportunity to do so, and with the inclusion another character like Starlight Glimmer, I fear Trixie is going to be left forgotten. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

To clarify something. Trixie DID do that high level aging spell, and other spells, like fusing Snips and Snails together by their horns in Magic Duel, HOWEVER, that wasn't even her under her own power. that was the Alicorn Amulet Amplifying what magic she DID have. when it got taken off of her later, she tried attacking Rainbow Dash and all she did was essentially tickle Rainbow. so yes, she can fit the bill of being Twilight's student for friendship, or her magical student, to become stronger, but she's no where near being Twilight's equal like Starlight is made to be.

3835449 While I do understand that she was able to perform the Aging Spell due to the Alicorn Amulet, it doesn't change the fact that she was able to understand HOW to perform it. Remember that Twilight Sparkle had a hard time fixing Starswirl's magic spell in the Season 3 finale, or that she had to learn about the time travel spell. It's safe to assume that the higher level spells are, the more complex they are to understand and learn, and the fact Trixie knew how to do it is impressive all on its own.

Also I've already stated that I understand that Trixie isn't equal to Twilight or Starlight in terms of magical power. What I AM saying is that she's just as smart as them.

3835535 True enough. she's just as smart, if not stronger. plus, she's gotta be physically very strong, considering for most of her life, prior to the Ursa Minor event, she was dragging her own stage wagon behind her the entire time.

3835596 Lotta leg muscle. Damn I'm getting all sweaty now all of the sudden.

Trixie's treatment always bothered me.

In her first ep, she could do weather magic and other things that (aside from mane 6 ponies) everyone thought was impressive. Certainly more so than just juggling small animals like Twilight did in the Magic Duel ep.
But they made *her* look bad when she couldn't deal with the bear. Forgetting her and Twilight were the only ones who bothered trying.

After she took the Amulet off, like Reddened Chaos said, all she could do was tickle RD.
:trixieshiftright:

Her job is magic.
Her talent is magic.
She makes a living doing magic shows in a land where 33.3% of the population can do magic.

I'm not saying she has the raw power of Twilight, (and I was surprised Starlight Glimmer had so much muscle, especially given how easily she was beat in her first ep.) but dammit, Trixie should be able to do a hell of a lot more, and given a chance to grow as a character.

They could redo almost the first 5 whole seasons just on Trixie (or I'm guessing Starlight) and the mane 6/Ponyville getting used to each other, and accepting of each other.

But they won't. Just like they don't really show the mane 6 doing things. Its more of "The Twilight Sparkle & Co" show anymore. And thats a damn shame. The toy divisions' bottom line trumps life lessons I guess.

3836103 You said what I wanted and more. If only we could make it into reality.

I know. Too bad there aren't any strong advocates for Trixie on staff.
But on the other hand, there's always fimfiction. A lot of the stories here should be episodes.

I, personally, get a kick out of the Lunaverse. Trixie can still be kind of a jerk at times, but she means well. And tries to do better.

or this one http://www.fimfiction.net/story/166203/1/unlikely-allies/unlikely-allies
"Twilight Sparkle and Trixie have an argument. They also save Equestria while they're at it."

One of the best parts.

“For the last time, Trixie, I read Starswirl’s unfinished Spell, it switched my friend’s cutie marks around, we sang some songs, I fixed the problem, and then I had these.”

“Trixie still thinks that it is a massive conspiracy to deny Trixie’s Greatness and Powerfulness. And Trixie still thinks that you looked ridiculous in that coronation dress.”

“There’s no convincing you, is there?”

“No, Trixie understands what you are saying. Trixie is simply disagreeing with you on principle, Sparkle.”
