Jesus Christ: Paragon of Harmony · 9:45pm Mar 27th, 2016
As you might have noticed, it’s Easter. And as a Christian, I’ve naturally been thinking a lot about Jesus. And for some reason, it occurred to be to put some thought into how Jesus embodies each of the six Elements of Harmony. So here we go:
Honesty: Not only are there no records of Jesus lying either by statement or omission, he also is repeatedly shown refusing to alter his message in the slightest in order to accommodate himself to the authorities, and he is scathing in his vituperation of corruption, especially among the religious elite. He neither lied nor ever tried to hide who he was.
Generosity: Christ gave up his divine glory, the rewards of his sinlessness, and at the last even his own life, in order to bring life, justification, and glorification to rebels and sinners like us. What more could he have given?
Loyalty: Even leaving aside his loyal obedience to the will and law of his Father in Heaven, Jesus provides for and protects his disciples. Even when he was being arrested, he ensured his disciples would be safe. And from the very cross itself, he ensured that his earthly mother would be provided for by giving her into the care of one of his favored disciples.
Kindness: There are dozens of stories showing Christ offering kindness to the outcast and the destitute. He said himself that “a bent reed he will not break and a smouldering wick he will not quench”, and he proved that all throughout his ministry.
Laughter: It’s not much noticed these days, due to a false belief that humor is somehow beneath Christ, but many of his sermons contained some amazingly funny lines, including such famous examples as the warning not to worry about the speck of sawdust in your neighbor’s eye until you deal with the 2x4 jammed into your own, or the warning that it is easier for a camel to thread itself through the eye of a needle than for even a wealthy man to attain holiness.
Friendship/Magic: Christ not only had numerous friends, he extended that friendship to prostitutes, tax collectors, and others who were outcasts from polite society. Neither race nor profession was a barrier to his offers of friendship and salvation.
In addition, the Triune nature of the Christian God makes him an embodiment of Friendship in a way that virtually no other god is or could be. From eternity past to eternity present to eternity yet to come, God the Father loves and is loved by God the Sun, and they both love and are loved by God the Spirit. Only the three-personal God of Christianity can truly be called a God of love, or Friendship, or Harmony.
