What unicorn horns are made from... · 11:06pm Mar 22nd, 2016

In light of the recent spate of stories on this topic, I feel obliged to weigh in.

Unicorn horns are made of keratin and bone.

Putting one in your mouth would be like sucking on an old dry toenail. Maybe one with glitter polish.

That’s all.

Actually, according to the original myths unicorn horns are made from a magical and unique material with fantastical purifying powers...

Named alicorn.

But, yeah, I severely doubt licking it would taste that much differently from your own nails.

Hey, some people are into that. :B

I call shenanigans. Keratin and bone would have no inherent power to shape and control magic energies, and it's pretty thoroughly established in canon that it's the horn which is the focus for all unicorn spells.

Clearly, the horns are also composed of radionuclides.

I'd always imagined a substance like mother-of-pearl, but magically imbued.

... what happened?

Ew.

So don't lick them, you will get cancer

Maybe the taste buds of ponies interpret keratin and bone as tasting similar to candy?

If that's the case, then I would be terrified to learn what ponies' taste buds interpret candy to taste like.

3822921 Well, Jello is made with horse bone, right?

Given that they enjoy eating flowers, they definitely taste _some_ things differently than we do.

If I were CelestAI trying to turn humans into virtual ponies with minimal changes, I'd swap "bitter" and "savoury" taste signals. Twilight's daisy sandwiches would taste like roast beef. :pinkiehappy:

I'll also cast a vote with Briarpelt for horns being closer to nacre than fingernails, but I freely admit that that's personal preference talking. I also agree that unicorn horns would neither be soft nor be tasty.

The horn-related story tropes that I find irritating are ones where a) the horn is treated as invulnerable, rather than like an object about as strong as wood glued to the bearer's skull, and 2) where it's treated as being able to easily heal. A broken horn would be about as serious as a compound (messy) fracture of the leg, and would be much less likely to work properly when healed.

That said, Rainbow's broken wing healed in days instead of months, and ponies are allegedly made of marshmallow and warm fuzzies, so it's possible that normal biology doesn't apply here.
