obs reviews proposal · 8:51pm Mar 22nd, 2016
hey guys who wants to see me do like a weekly fic review
I'd review a fic(s) from the featured box
and maybe include like a recipe for brownies in there somewhere sometimes
it'd be great
(also anyone have ideas on how I should select fics from the box?)
Tbh I would just be happy with the brownies recipe
Bake the brownies, give them a rating out of ten
Then pick that number in the feature box. Bottom is #1, top is #10.

well I mean if you really need the brownie fix you could just like
google a recipe
3821041
plum literally all brownies are 10/10 to me, this isn't a sustainable solution
3821046 None of them are Obs approved brownies
sure why not
You could always use random.org or something like it to pick which story to review. And which recipe to bake.

3821054 exactly this
3821058 this too
i support this idea
Generate a random number from a Binomial(9,0.2) distribution. (Follow this link.)
0 : Top of Feature Box
1 : Second story in Feature box
...
9 : Last story in Feature Box
This totally won't make you just pick the second or third story all the time. Totally.
Consider this:
Everyone who's reviewed the feature box in the past has burnt out.
Run a RNG with the numbers 1-10. Whatever number it lands on, that's the Nth slot in the features box you pic. That means the update slots are just as fair game as the main features are.
DO POT BROWNIES!!!
Sounds great.
Review the top story in the featured box, and the lowest story in the popular box.
Also don't forget to bring booze, it's like standard equipment at this point.
Why not?

That is a very finicky idea considering that the popular stories box changes order every time the front page is refreshed...
Oh man, absolutely, please do that. I can't tell you how much I've missed weekly feature box reviews since John Perry got out of the game.
I'd just roll a 10-sided die, rather than using some computer program.
You'd totally have to give the fic brownie-related ratings, rather than star, or x/y.

People have some very wordy ways of saying 'roll d10'.
I never took you for a masochist, Obs.
3821034 <-- What he said.
3821289
Actually, mine is "Roll a five-sided die 9 times, and count how many 5's you get."
Forget the reviews. Just give us brownie recipes.

3821395
1 cup Sugar (+ a little extra, see below)
3/4 cup Flour
5 Tblsp Cocoa (Dutch process is best)
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 cup Shortening (+ a little extra, see below)
1 Tblsp Vanilla extract
2 Eggs
Combine dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Add wet ingredients and mix until well distributed. Use a paper towel to spread shortening around the base and sides of your cooking pan, then add sugar and roll it around the inside of the pan until base and sides are well dusted. Add brownie dough and smooth flat. Bake at 350ºF for ~20min, until brownies crest in the middle. Test with a toothpick to make sure brownies aren't undercooked. Very slightly undercooked is ideal, but if the toothpick comes out coated in dough, you need to cook them longer. Eat, get addicted, make more, become fat.
3821432 Is this recipe Obs approved
Yes!
Join us on the Master Review List! :D
3821432 What 3821436 said. Obs makes stuff with a microwave and a cup. I don't know if this traditional method would work.
3821497
In that case, for the microwave chefs amongst us:
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons water
1⁄4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 dash salt
4 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
In a 12 oz coffee mug, add water, butter, vanilla and dash of salt. Whisk well.
Add cocoa powder, whisk well. Add sugar, whisk well. Add flour, whisk well.
Microwave for 60 to 90 seconds. Center should be slightly molten. Careful not to overcook.
Enjoy with a spoon. Careful, brownie will be hot.
Write your own story, get it into the feature box via many followers, then review that one. That way you don't have to worry about getting 8-10 on any of the other methods proposed and having to read a 100k word fic.
Hello Obs,
How about a review exchange:
- ask for volunteers to do reviews
- use a random number generator to select one each week (or every two weeks)
- selected person reviews a story of your choice (featured or not)
- you review a story of that person's choice (featured or not)
- bonus points for closing the review with a photo of a brownie (or cupcake) baked by the reviewer!
Since nobody else has been shameless enough yet, I'll volunteer for the obligatory "Just pick my story to review" comment.
That would, of course, require me to get a story in the Featurebox weekly, which would require me to get off my butt and write more. So I think we can all agree that's a win-win.
You could also write stories.

where
Hey, I would love some brownie recipes. Those things are amazing. Sadly, I have to make mine in a microwave.
3821084
Hopefully the brownies down't get burnt out.
But yeah, reviewing isn't easy. To make it easier, you could just give you initial impressions after reading the stories (or just a chunk of the story if it's gotten long) without trying to be too formal in the review process. Could probably also help if you regularly get others to join in as well.
This should have already been a thing. But since it isn't yet a thing and has the potential to be a thing - make it be a thing.
