I am so fucking angry right now I can't think straight! Ok I had appendicitis back in December luckily they caught it before it ruptured and I even went home the next day. Yay right?

NO!

I just found a letter from my insurance that got lost among stuff that was never opened and I can't think straight. My insurance WILL NOT pay for my stay because it was not "Medically Necessary"

...Really? REALLY was I just supposed to waltz out after having an organ removed?

Also It wasn't like I had a choice of staying the night. My surgery was at 11:30 pm I went home before noon.

Also I have no idea if they are paying for the surgery itself...

What is the point of insurance anymore? That sounds like they don't do anything now... :rainbowderp:

The bill said you did not have to worry about the bill, and that the company and the hospital were going to work together to make it work... which makes no sense.

Let me guess do you have blue cross. because I know your pain if you do.

You have ways to appeal thanks to the ACA... but personally, this is as strong an argument for single payer as anything I've ever heard. This would be impossible in Canada.

I wish you the best of luck.. You may have some protections for this (I highly doubt there isn't a special law that may apply to protect you) but it's entirely possible that with the company closed down, no one will be able to get money from them without serious effort. I've seen this affect my business (in another industry) with a client who was paying to have their business shutting down slowly, and kept deferring payments. Until one day they didn't return any calls and they had declared bankruptcy, and no one could get money from them despite them offering money for work in helping the business shut down in the first place.

In short, when going out of business, you'd be surprised what shady stuff some businesses will do, with the idea that their obligations can be discharged.

For starters, remember that the goal of any insurance agency is to short costs wherever they think they can. That's you. Your objective is to make the insurance company think they're not going to be able to push your claim under the rug. Now, since your insurance company went t--ts up, they probably just folded under all of the bills they were supposed to pay and blanket-responded to them "Not our fault, too bad." In all odds, there is a government agency/program that is supposed to pick up the slack from the folded company, and also in all odds it will take them a year at best in even the simplest cases.

You will probably need to do the following:
1) Collect ALL of the bills from your little trip through the medical system. Put them in a folder. Keep the folder safe. List your admission date, your discharge date, and any revisits.
2) Track ALL of the payments made to each of these pesky little bills that you know of (You, the insurance, and any write-downs)
3) (and most important) Go to the hospital and talk to some nice person in the billing section. Take your folder. Don't let them take it from you, but let them make copies if they need to. Explain the situation. They will have heard it many times before. Be brief, factual, and don't rant. This will make the hospital billing section person a much happier person. You want them happy. You want them to be patient about getting what little money they're going to get from the scragged insurance company. Those two things do not go together.. Be persistent. Make sure they know you have no assets worth filing suit over. Do not sign anything yet. Wait until whatever wrestling between the billing section and the failed insurance company is complete, over and done. Still do not sign anything. They will huff and puff. They will threaten to turn the bill over to a collection agency. Remember, they take an instant 50% wack the moment they do that, so they'll be reluctant. Odds are, they'll take a substantial writeoff to keep it out of collections.
4) If the bill goes into collections, read Dave Ramsey's article about bill collectors. Commit it to memory. Try to keep the bill from going into collections. Those people are nasty. The $100 bill that gets turned over to collections will bloom into $200, $400 or even $1000 with late fees and other bogus fluff. Remember that the company probably paid $50 for that bill. Keep that in mind. Bill collectors lie. Remember that whenever you talk to them. NEVER let them have access to your savings or checking account. NEVER.
