So it goes. Seriously, I've been making things and putting them on the internet for forever and how much I like something/how much effort I put into it vs. how much the rest of the universe likes something are annoyingly unrelated.

We love it regardless of the circumstances of its birth.
My boyfriend's most-acclaimed story was banged out in a couple hours as a first draft. Even I rank it in his top three. And I've pre-read like ALL of them.
Sometimes you get an idea that just works.
(I think it helps that it's a compact short story playing to your strengths and incorporating your insight, which means that some of the technical details in longer fics aren't necessarily present)
