haha fic that has a sexually suggestive title but it's actually nonsexual and literal that's the joke · 2:13am Feb 26th, 2016
hey guys
So I get that humor's subjective and like establishing an apparently scandalous situation only to reveal that it's actually not what the audience was thinking has been a comedic staple for generations
but
if you're going to spend two thousand words writing a fic
tell more than one joke with it
that's just my advice
I don't even have anything against the basic premise, just actually use the fact that you wrote two thousand words to make it funny beyond the single extended joke
that's all
Its a fan fiction site, you're expecting waaaaay too much.
Just be glad the humans acting villainously trope is for the most part over.
Trying to imagine what you're referencing here...
Let's be thankful there's only one in the feature box at a time. There were a few months with an average of two at once.

Well, I'd never do something so silly as that.
Twilight wants to see Uranus.

Oh my, certainly!

How about a fic where the land crustacians under Fluttershy's care actually turn out to be timetraveling aliens wanting to return to their home planet?
"Fluttershy's crabs want to return to Uranus"
Hehehe it's funny cuz you're referencing the thing at the place that's noticeable by everyone in the site with the stuff and the ohhh you know what I'm talkin' about
Well, since nobody else is sayin' it, I'll say it.
I agree with you 100%, Obs.
You should see the longest joke in the world. It's just a leadup to a lame pun. That said, it is a good story, even if it is a shaggy dog story.
Eh, I did enjoy it, but I saw the ending coming a mile away. I read it anyways because I like the author, and have read a couple pretty good stories by him.
Besides, mentions of Shady Daze always catch my attention.

(Edit: I failed to note that there were two fics of that description in the featured box, not one. After reading the other one, I think that was more likely the one that triggered this blog...)
I often feel like I'm missing something when Obs posts his posts that assume people keep track of inconsequential things.
I'd enjoy a story with a sexually suggestive title that's obviously and blatantly being set up for a non-sexual resolution and that's the joke, only for it turn out to be sexual, and the joke's on the reader. Sadly, rating it "teen" or "mature" probably would spoil the joke.

I suppose you could try to disguise it by including openly pornographic dialogue early on, say, to make the readers think it was M-rated for that reason.
Why can't I upvote blogs?
The joke might be implicitly forcing a poor moderator to read it.
Does that mean I shouldn't write that story about a stallion named Mourningwood? He is the world’s leading expert on the the properties and applications of his namesake - wood from the “Weeping Willow” tree. Mourningwood is hard, yet flexible, which makes it perfect for many applications such as plowing or hammering.

No you should totally do that because that's an amazing adventure of ongoing innuendo and punnery
I just mean like do more with things like "I'm pretending this situation is sexual" fics than just spend two thousand words setting up the reveal that "Haha it actually wasn't sexual"
At least my pun title fic is more than two thousand words.
What startles me is that the story you're talking about actually managed to stretch out all the way to 2000 words. I mean, the site lets you grope for the Publish button at half that length.
... oh, wait, the fic at the top of the Featurebox started life as a Writeoff entry. That might explain it. The Writeoff short story contests are 2000-8000 words.
(Though, in all fairness, I did mention in my Writeoff review of the story that I appreciated that it kept going past the reveal. So there is at least some content beyond the single joke there, even if the majority of it is beating on that single drum.)

I did that once, because people were getting too used to my usual bait-and-switch.
I'm part of the reason our story approvers might have drinking problems.

This is why I feel I owe some kind of penance to the story approvers. Like, I don't feel bad suckering the average reader into one of my stories that totally disappoints, but the poor story approvers who used to have to read every one of them. . . .

I second 3778730 on this. I will read it.
Pass a rule to ban it.

Uhh... Horizon old buddy, old pal...
Obviously I can't be sure, but I'm kinda guessing that Obselescence wasn't talking about the same story you're talking about.
(I'd hazard that you're supposed to be looking at this one.)

I'm not sure whether to apologize, or to blame the FIMFiction reading public (and/or heat algorithm) for the problem being so common in the featurebox that that sort of mistake is reasonable to make.
