Gravity Falls Finale Followup: A theory on the biggest lingering question from the finale. (SPOILERS!) · 5:51am Feb 16th, 2016

So, if you've seen the Gravity Falls finale, you'll know that the one thing which seems to have been hurriedly shoehorned in is Stan's inexlplicably quick recovery of his memories.

I have a theory about that.

1. His deep love for his family made his heart and mind desperately cling to memories that were being erased.

2. Stan's exhibited unusually adept control of the mindscape in the past. And also in this episode. It may not be POSSIBLE to erase the mind of someone that adept at shaping the reality of the mind.

3. Bill took most of the force of the Blind Eye gun. Even though it erased Stan's mind, so much of the ray's energy went into erasing Bill that the erasure effect on the rest of Stan's mind didn't take.

Most likely a mix of each of them.

3757837 That's actually what I meant. I didn't mean those are three separate theories. I meant that those three factors are involved.

3757843 oh yeah sorry about that I misread it

I think it is because they erased Stanley Pines from his mind, not Waddles or anyone else.

So... what are your thoughts on Bill's dying words? A failed attempt to free himself or something more?

Another thing to consider; we have roughly two examples of what the Gun can do to a person:
•McGucket, whose mind is so broken that it actually can't be erased anymore, and yet still managed to claim at least minor recall when given recorded evidence of his life,
•And the members of the Society, who explicitly do not want to remember.

To some degree, I suspect that the Gun is tied to a willingness to forget, at least at lower levels of exposure, and that even at higher levels it's trumped by solid proof. Makes sense, considering it's origin and primary users.
