When doing stories set in the past... please do your research.

Not knowing what you are writing about can... cause issues.

    Example:
My dad read a book set in London and he was a bit annoyed that the author had characters riding bikes... 200 years before they were invented.

    Extreme example.

    Feature I wish Fimfiction had

I wish fimfiction would clean up the in-progress list.

    What do I mean?
Currently, if you go searching in the in-progress stories... you will find allot of dead/hiatus fics that the author never bothered to label as being dead/on hiatus.

    What I wish would happen.
    * Mark any story where the author hasn't logged onto the website in a year as dead.

Why harems are hard to do well

There are 3 types of harem stories.
    1. Porn -> This is done for exotic scenarios. The goal is to be erotic, not deep story telling.
    2. Wish fulfillment/Mary Sue -> Everyone loves my character! Everyone I fantasize about will mary him/her! And get along, even with wildly different and clashing personalities!
    3. Attempting to write a romance.

    Methods of getting to Equestria

There are many methods for getting to Equestria in FIM fiction. Thought I would make a list of them all.
If I missed any, please tell me.

    WIP

    1. Natural/supernatural event - A random portal sucks the human and/or his surroundings into Equestria. The advantage of this is that it is short and to the point.

    Your house in Equestria...

...and why it shouldn't magically have utilities hooked up.

I can't believe I'm actually having to post this... but... I just came across yet another story that does this.

If your character knows the future.... · 3:15pm Feb 14th, 2016

Don't give them any other powers.

Seriously, there are many fantasy/sci-fi books out there where the character's foreknowledge is their ONLY superpower. They could be a little old lady and even Galactus would give them respect.

Why?
Because foreknowledge.... even sporatic foreknowledge is extremely powerful.

Examples:
You could place a bet on exactly when Celestia will finish raising the sun.... during the summer sun festival that Nightmare Moon returns. Most ponies would bet times like 7:00:30, 7:01, 7:02 or 7:01:30... etc. While you would be like 7:30.

Chrysalis....you could stop the entire invasion or invest in stocks in companies that make military supplies before hand and then sell them when they go up in value afterwords.

If you knew about the fight in Apploosa. You could go there with a wagon full of flour, sugar, and a lard substitute to sell to the ponies after the fight. Since many ponies would be low in the ingredients for pie. (You wouldn't be able to gouge them, but you probably would earn a bit of profit.)

You could bring a camera to the Gala and secretly take pictures to sell to the paparazii afterwords.
etc. etc. etc.

If you know even sporadic future events .... you can easily become extremely rich and influential. With enough planning, you could change events however you liked. Hell, you could easily start a cult dedicated to following you if you knew the future.

Why did I bring all this up?

Because I just read a fan-fiction where the protagonist has magic on the level of Discord and has foreknowledge. :facehoof: <Sarcasm> Oh, my character is virtually omnipotent! He/she needs a boost of power..... I know lets give him/her foresight! We wouldn't want my omnipotent character to experience any surprises. I need him/her to be halfway omniscient as well!</Sarcasm>

Foreknowledge isn't a minor superpower! Stop giving it to otherwise extremely powerful OCs!

Welp, I suppose that happened... Seriously, fore-knowledge is actually more of a geas; you end up knowing all the surprises! Life would get boring! The only time that would be a good thing is when you either just got the power, were an emotionless-already-depressed robot, or in a bad fanfic.
