No more big British brony conventions after this year · 12:12am Feb 11th, 2016
In news that isn't a huge surprise to most people, BUCK -- the only large-scale brony con in the UK -- has announced that the 2016 iteration, in April, will be its last. There just isn't the critical mass any more for a con on that scale in this country, and so we British types will be leaving the field to BronyCon in Germany and the 47 billion (approx) events on the other side of the Atlantic. I hope you American guys know how lucky you are; make the most of it!
That doesn't mean there'll be no pony cons in the UK next year, as both BronyScot and the multi-gen UK PonyCon should be going ahead in the autumn. All being well in terms of health, finances and logistics, I hope to be at UK PonyCon myself. But the days when the UK fandom could sustain an all-out ponypalooza are passing, and they won't be coming back. (Or even coming BUCK.) This truly is the end of an era, and we're losing something special.
All the more reason for you to
stealmagically acquire $3000 and come visit me at any of the 4 west coast cons, bby.So far, I've missed the boat with going to any of the big conventions, just because it took me so long to get into the fandom proper. UK Ponycon was a very nice introduction into conventions, and has left me wanting a lot more.
So I'm very glad I can make it to the last BUCK, to experience something on that scale for the first time. It's really sad that it unfortunately won't work out for you this time.
Having met a few people at different meets who travel more, I can see myself trying to get to some of the international conventions in 2017 like GalaCon (assuming it's on then) or even Bronycon (which I'm pretty sure will be on in 2017). It'd be a once-in-lifetime type opportunity.
3746598 Sheesh, what are you guys going to do with yourselves when the fandom finally fades over there, too?
3747500 It's sad, but I did make it to two BUCKs, and those were the two at the height of the fandom, so I think I've been reasonably lucky. I'm pretty much "retired" now from big cons -- I won't be going abroad for them -- but if you get the chance then I'm sure you won't regret taking it.
I was planning on going to BUCK 2016 because I was didn't want to miss another like I did the last two, but then money trouble hit me. And now this? It's like life just doesn't want me to go to BUCK...
3748083 Ouch, that sucks. Sorry to hear it.
