    State of the Unicorn: Poor

That's poor in both senses, I'm afraid! Though before I say any more, I need to stress that I have a warm, safe home, enough to eat, internet access... the essentials, really. I am not in danger of losing those. However, I won't be doing much beyond those essentials for a while. Without going into boring details, I will very shortly be going in for dental work to be done. Which, as

    Happy Hearth's Warming Eve!

I keep my online activity to an absolute minimum on Christmas Day, so I'll take this opportunity to wish all of you reading this a Merry Christmas!ยน However life has treated you over the past year, I hope it treats you better over the next. I shall be back to reading Fimfiction on Boxing Day!

    So then, Doctor Who

Loved it! A few little quibbles, not all the acting from the newcomers was stellar and sadly parts of the gender-related stuff felt awkward and forced, eg "something a male-presenting Time Lord wouldn't understand", but I liked much more than I didn't. Plus one of my worries about the new Disney-cash-infused Who has been dispelled: this definitely did

    Bloody Covid

Fortunately not in the literal sense! But yeah, I'm currently stuck at home, yet not feeling well enough to concentrate on ponyfic. It's a seriously annoying combination. :pinkiesick:

    UK PonyCon report

This is inelegantly copy/pasted over from the (slightly) nicer looking report over on Louder Yay. Of course, I'm sure you all read Louder Yay anyway because you're such great people, but just in case here's the report here as well...

No more big British brony conventions after this year · 12:12am Feb 11th, 2016

In news that isn't a huge surprise to most people, BUCK -- the only large-scale brony con in the UK -- has announced that the 2016 iteration, in April, will be its last. There just isn't the critical mass any more for a con on that scale in this country, and so we British types will be leaving the field to BronyCon in Germany and the 47 billion (approx) events on the other side of the Atlantic. I hope you American guys know how lucky you are; make the most of it!

That doesn't mean there'll be no pony cons in the UK next year, as both BronyScot and the multi-gen UK PonyCon should be going ahead in the autumn. All being well in terms of health, finances and logistics, I hope to be at UK PonyCon myself. But the days when the UK fandom could sustain an all-out ponypalooza are passing, and they won't be coming back. (Or even coming BUCK.) This truly is the end of an era, and we're losing something special.

All the more reason for you to steal magically acquire $3000 and come visit me at any of the 4 west coast cons, bby.

So far, I've missed the boat with going to any of the big conventions, just because it took me so long to get into the fandom proper. UK Ponycon was a very nice introduction into conventions, and has left me wanting a lot more.

So I'm very glad I can make it to the last BUCK, to experience something on that scale for the first time. It's really sad that it unfortunately won't work out for you this time.

Having met a few people at different meets who travel more, I can see myself trying to get to some of the international conventions in 2017 like GalaCon (assuming it's on then) or even Bronycon (which I'm pretty sure will be on in 2017). It'd be a once-in-lifetime type opportunity.

3746598 Sheesh, what are you guys going to do with yourselves when the fandom finally fades over there, too? :rainbowhuh:

3747500 It's sad, but I did make it to two BUCKs, and those were the two at the height of the fandom, so I think I've been reasonably lucky. I'm pretty much "retired" now from big cons -- I won't be going abroad for them -- but if you get the chance then I'm sure you won't regret taking it.

I was planning on going to BUCK 2016 because I was didn't want to miss another like I did the last two, but then money trouble hit me. And now this? It's like life just doesn't want me to go to BUCK... :fluttershysad:

3748083 Ouch, that sucks. Sorry to hear it.
