Blog post about IMGUR blacklist here.
Basically though, the way people on fimfiction.net was using imgur (for example: images embedded into stories from imgur) was in violation of imgur's ToS (which probably almost no one has read). Thus, the blacklist. This isn't a new Terms of Service either, it's apparently been against imgur ToS for a long time, just no one noticed.

Probably because it seems a bit counterintuitive to what an image hosting site like imgur is for.

I mean that's literally the only thing I use them for, and not just recently, but for years now. I think I started using it some time around 2010.
...what the fuck. Why would they have a thing against embedded images? That's what image hosting is for.
Nevertheless, I'm sure there's a convenient tool that moves imgur images to sites that don't do such a thing. This sounds like imgur does this frequently, and thus has likely been fixed by angry customers.
