    Chapter 56 Promo!

Flash Sentry Retrospective: What the f*** is with this guy? · 7:41pm Jan 30th, 2016

If there is anything I'm aware of when it comes to fandoms, it's how people might have completely unpredictable reactions to characters big or small. Someone who has no real bearing on the plot or only appears for one scene might be taken in with praise, like the some guy hitting the Titanic's propeller or a random Stormtrooper who can actually fight. And this can happen with characters small impact and big. Heck, even I've experienced this. I try to insert a Free-To-Use OC into my story for a funny scene, next thing I know she's launching armadas of ships and ends up returning as a member of the core roster. And, reaction to larger role characters can also have a mixed reaction. But, mixed reaction is to be expected. I dislike Starlight Glimmer as a villain as I see her as needing huge amounts of plot-armor and contrivance to give her the power and skills to be a threat, when I can think up ways I think could have made her work just fine without those. Others think she's the best villain of the franchise and they are perfectly entitled to their own opinion, no harm in that at all.

But in FiM, there is one character I really felt needed an advocate more than just about any other. Not because they got hated on, but because in all honesty, the reasons for the hatred I thought were just about the dumbest reasons I've ever heard. There is a difference between not liking someone for doing something like hogging the spotlight (Nick from PR: Mystic Force), having too many 'Break The Mold' powers (Starlight Glimmer again); or being an outright Canon-Sue (Tendou from KR Kabuto); and hating on someone with really little justification.

You know him, most hate him, I got hate mail for giving him a flippin' cameo; Flash Sentry. Don't worry buddy, I got your back.

Now I'm going to play devil's advocate here and try to clarify why exactly I disagree with the commonly cited reasons for Flash getting the hate he does; and what exactly I think went wrong with him. He's not perfect or even a character I particularly enjoyed more than most others, but the reaction I saw him get was so hilariously lopsided I felt something needed be said. And for this I'm not going to harp on the "He stole mah waifu!" nonsense because that excuse is so pathetic I'm not even going to grant it the time.

1. "He doesn't really do anything."
.... Who did in that movie? No really, rewatch EG1 and tell me what enormous plot contributions the members of the Human 6 beyond Twilight actually did. Most of them had one important scene and that was pretty much it. Now granted they are characters we (sorta) know already, but they are still unique entities in Twilight's journey just as much as Flash is. Heck, when you really look at it Flash actually worked at bailing Twilight out more than most of the 5 did. Yes there was the whole "Make her princess of the Fall Formal" bit and the musical number in the lunch room, but that was a group effort and individually each of them only really contributed one instance. Flash's instance? Saving Twilight from being framed and disqualified entirely. If it weren't for him, the entire effort of the 6 mean bunk all. He did just as much to subvert Sunset Shimmer as any of them did until the finale, and he did it without even being in on the whole plan involving Twilight. He just did it because he's a nice guy.

Had the movie been longer or been serialized into episodes, we probably would have seen him do more like the other cast would have. But, time constraints and the fact he's entirely new meant they couldn't do that. Don't blame the character, blame the run time.

2. "He's generic good-guy!"
And nothing else in that movie was a highschool movie cliche? Seriously this entire film was like "Mean Girls-Lite: Hasbro Edition". Everyone is a cliche. Hate him for that and you're being exclusive. Besides which would you rather for our heroine as a possible interest, a jerkass high school cliche or a nice one?

3. "He's a popular guy cliche but he's still nice, he shoulda been a nerd!"
Self-insert much? And hehe... yah, my high school experience included mutated dragonflies and literal mad science labs, so maybe I'm a tad unorthodox here; but in my experience the "Popular" folks came in just as many blends as the "Normal" crowd. Heck, I had friends in a whole bunch of cliques and more often than not, the popular folks actually were the nicer people. When Courtney _______ and Eric _______ were crowned prom queen and king in my senior year, pretty much every clique cheered them on. Why? Because to get popular enough that a vast majority of the school liked them, they had to be pretty damn nice to people. At _______ High, you wouldn't make too many supporters being a stereotypical jerk jock or alpha witch. Most of the time, it was the people trying to be popular that were the jerks, whereas the people who just were popular were because they earned it. I was a big geek (still am) and yet I distinctly remember being on good terms with a majority of
-the Sports Teams
-Cheerleaders and Dance Squad
-Honors Society
-etc.
Were their jackasses in those ones? Definitely. But if you want to know any cliche I think is garbage with high school settings? It's that being popular automatically makes you dumb and rude. The fact Flash Sentry subverted that trope actually put a small smile on my face. And on top of that, look at the medium. It's a franchise aimed at younger teens and girls. Of course they are going to make the male love interest handsome. Just like how 90% female love interest in comic books have a model builds. It's not overt "Sex Sells", it's just giving us something nice to look at.

4. "Lauren Faust said they shouldn't give the 6 love interests!"
Gonna commit a fandom heresy here and say.... "So?"
Lauren Faust is a damn good creator, one of the best in the generation by a good margin. But, the show has gone on and evolved after she left. Yes, Lauren gave us a fantastic setting and start up, but look at what we've gotten since then under other creative management like Meghan McCarthy-
-Arc villains on both the season openings and closings
-World expansions like Tree of Harmony and new kingdoms like the Crystal Empire
-Every single post-Season 2 villain

The truth is, many of the most beloved episodes and arcs for the fandom actually came after Lauren's contributions stopped. Is this me undercutting her work? Hell no. But using her word as the bible for what should and shouldn't be done, and throwing what other creators, creators who have proven themselves to be quite capable, have done under the bus in her name is a bizarre form of selection I will not partake in. This isn't like with Tomayuki Tanaka, who literally kept doing kaiju movies until he killed over. Faust chose to step away from the show and let others handle is. Let them succeed or fail by their own accord, not by matter of them being Faust or not.

In my mind, Flash Sentry didn't get the best introduction, but it was serviceable. After all looking back at how people see the first movie in comparison to the 2nd and 3rd, many see Equestria Girls 1 as just sort of a dry run of the series. Getting the setting and feet on the ground, then doing good story with it in the sequels. It's actually much like the Season 1 opener to FiM in that respect. Had we been given more characterization for Flash Sentry in the following movies and ignored the hatred, be it vocal minority or not, I feel he could have been a well rounded and well liked character. And my proof for this theory? Two words.

Think of Sunset, and now erase all the character development we got for her in the second and third movies. What do we have? Well, I'll tell you what I saw people saying.
-Copy-Paste Backstory
-Stereotypical Alpha Bitch Personality
-Dumbest Takeover Plan Yet
-Heel-Face Turn Last Minute
-Stupid Lackeys
-Another Twilight Counterpart ("Muh Trixie!")

And now she's pretty much one of the all time favorites, a lot more people liked her after the following movies came out. What happened?

Pretty much everything nice I hear people say about Sunset is entirely tied to the following movies and comics. Neither of which Flash Sentry really got anything in. Why? Well I could cite a bunch of reasons. Lack of appeal for a male character in a female targeted media, maybe hard to fit him into the plot (though I beg to differ); some creative decisions at Hasbro, etc. But do you want to know what I honestly think caused it? The fan reaction, more specifically the fandumb reaction. Whereas Sunset had a saving grace of being a female character in a female media, thus her hate could be ignored as it it be easier to use her in other projects, Flash had no such protection. The team behind EG took a gamble on him and the fan hatred convinced them "Oh crap, can't do that again!".

Think hard about the progression Sunset Shimmer got in RR and FG. Now, apply some of that to Flash. Rainbow Rocks is often considered the best of the series and is music themed. Who in the first movie did we establish by merit of him carrying a guitar around, played music? Hint, wasn't a vast majority of the characters playing music in RR. It could have been something as simple as Flash helping out the Rainbooms as the one who helped get them into music and was assisting them in the competition. This would make him a target for the sirens as a means of screwing up the Rainbooms, meaning him getting influenced/mind controlled by their magic would have a greater impact on the plot. It not just be "That nice guy is being controlled!", it be "Our friend and in some ways mentor is now turned against us!"

This could possibly made worse by him maybe being aware of their plans and getting forced into spilling some of the beans to the sirens. And on top of that, might have some expansion on the backstory he and Sunset used to date. Maybe we could get a flashback (no pun intended) showing them in an earlier year. Being in a whole new world, maybe it was Flash Sentry who helped ease the 'new girl' into the school Freshman year? But when Sunset's crueler personality began to show itself and she started to be manipulative, or dare I say even abusive, he cut himself off. It could also explain why Flash was averting some of Sunset's schemes in the first movie. He's aware more than anyone just how mean and controlling she could be, so for the past few years he's been the guy trying to play flippin' damage control! It give a nice dynamic with him having big trust issues with Sunset. This would cycle back into Sunset's redemption arc as she is now being around someone with a pretty shaky history between them and she's trying to make things right. It would also be a nice self contained metaphor for Sunset redeeming herself to the school as a whole.

In all honesty, I think Flash Sentry could have been a pretty great character had he been given the opportunity. But, by combination of decisions on high and probably the dumbest fan hatred I've seen in a long while, we didn't get to see that. You're not my favorite character Flash, but you're still okay in my book. You're a nice chap, I think I'll give you another scene and try to pull some saving throws for you when I get to the Amalgam'verse's Rainbow Rocks.

Dude, respect for standing up to the Flash Sentry haters. You pretty much shut down every argument in a mature and thoughtful manner.

One of the times where I wished we were able to thumb up a blog.

People have their opinions on which characters they do and don't like. (I also think Flash is a good guy.) People should respect you for which characters you like in a franchise, and if they don't, it's their problem; you're still entitled to your opinion.

I don't hate Brad I do like to make fun of him. It's just to funny.

Wait, what's this about mad science and mutant dragonflies?! o_0

3723351

Long story. Science project of mine tested fertilizer agents and salinity changes on dragonfly nymphs. One of the tested nymphs grew twice it's normal size, turned green, and became hyper aggressive.

3723315

Ah making fun of stuff tis what we live for XD

3723256

My pleasure and thanks for the compliment :)

3723291

You compliment is more than enough my friend

Amen, very well said.

I'll straight up admit: I do not like Flash. But the reasons for that are kinda complicated, and they've shifted over time.

4. "Lauren Faust said they shouldn't give the Mane 6 love interests!"

Before EqG came out, this is what it started as for me. However, while I still think that keeping romance (not counting parody romances like Blueblood and Trenderhoof) out of the equation for the mane six in the show is a good move, it's no longer my primary grievance against Flash.
I should note that while I do think that following that particular rule of Lauren's is a good idea, I by no means think that the post-Faust showrunners have to move in absolute lock-step with everything that she did. Heck, I've been a big believer in McCarthy and the others ever since A Canterlot Wedding. They do a GREAT job with the show, and ACW proves it for me.

Which brings me to my current grievance with Flash: He's bizzarely useless. The closest equivalent on your list of common complaints would be "He doesn't really do anything", but to me it's more complex than that. He doesn't do anything, and it baffles me. As part of that, there's one thing you said that I have to disagree with:

Had the movie been longer or been serialized into episodes, we probably would have seen him do more like the other cast would have. But, time constraints and the fact he's entirely new meant they couldn't do that. Don't blame the character, blame the run time.

This is untrue. The runtime was not to blame for Flash being the way he is. What's my proof? A Canterlot Wedding. In a runtime shorter than Equestria Girls, McCarthy and her crew intoduced THREE completely new characters (one of them being a guy) and had them all do cool plot-critical stuff. So clearly, they know how to introduce all-new characters in a short time, proven further in later episodes.

And yet with Flash, he was completely superfluous to the plot. Normally when a character is as superfluous as he is (and isn't a background character), you'd cut them out. Indeed, it'd be trivially easy to completely remove Flash from EqG (I don't think you'd have to change a single line of dialogue). And yet, he's still there anyway. Weirder still is that there were plenty of opportunities to flesh him out and make him more relevant, and yet they were skipped over in favor of moments that try to push him as a love interest.

Quick aside: When talking about Flash's contributions to the plot, I do not count the cut-and-paste photoshop scene in his favor. In short, it's because the scene itself is completely bogus. Flash only gets the opportunity to bail out Twilight because VP Luna was too stupid to run her fingernail over the surface of the photos (or heck, give the photos anything more than a passing glance. I could rant about this scene in general, but this is not the blog for it).

So, to sum up: We have showrunners who do a good job and know how to introduce characters in a short runtime, and yet they chose to include a completely undeveloped and superfluous character that they could have easily improved but chose not to. Flash is useless, and it makes no sense. This completely baffles me. The only theory that makes any sense to me (aside from the showrunners simply screwing up, which is possible) is that Flash and his love interest status were mandated for inclusion by the higher-ups, and the showrunners (who weren't interested in including him at all) only included him as much as was strictly necessary to appease the execs. After all, while his lack of prominence in the second and third movies can be blamed on reducing him in response to fan backlash, the first movie has no such excuse.

Hmm. Y'know, maybe It's not quite correct to say that I dislike Flash. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that the way that Flash was handled confuses and aggravates my storytelling sensibilities. Or maybe it's because the odd laziness about him can generally be seen as a microcosm for the cavalcade of problems present in the first and third Equestria girls movies (though that's a rant for a different blog). Maybe both, I dunno.

3723605

This is a big difference for be between disliking something, and hating it. Hating it requires some very strong feelings. For instance, I think Starlight Glimmer is the worst arc villain of the entire roster. I never bought her threat, I thought her motivations were poorly executed, I disliked the plot armor I felt she got, and the appearance of the other villains in the finale just reminded me more of what I wish we got. But, I don't hate her. She ironically is in a similar boat as Flash for me of a good idea but with poor execution, or just not really given the right scenes to make for a good execution.

As far as I'm concerned, I see Flash as a huge missed opportunity; just the circumstances for why I think said opportunity was missed has me placing blame on the fan base for the hate. Hatred which I in my honest opinion, was unfounded at best or just excuses at worst.

And something tells me even if Flash was given an opportunity, he'd still be 'Man Of Steel' grade divisive. Just nature of the character type.

And actually Lance, I will correct you on something. There pretty much was no mandate to make Flash or make him a love interest. In fact Hasbro was quite lax about the creation of the EG movies. The only rule they really gave DHX was "Put them in a high school", from their it was free roam for the creative team. He's just as much a creative experiment of McCarthy as Sunset was. Evidently, an experiment that pretty much failed.

Superfluous is the grab word for the first movie. When you really pick into the meat and bones of it, how many characters in that movie or even RR were really needed? Who really contributed to the plot? I love the sirens as a group, but when you pick through it all, not much of the plot of RR would have changed if there was only two or even just one of them. Aria didn't even get a name drop and her contribution was "Bicker with Sonata" and "Back up Adagio".
If you looked at it a certain way, imagine how much more stuff we could have gotten down in EG1, had the entire subplot of Twilight having to re-befriend the Mane 6 counterparts was dropped or trimmed down? We already know those characters personalities and quirks, we didn't really need a reminder. To use your Canterlot Wedding comparison, think about just how much screen time and plot relevance the Mane 6 in that got vs. how much the Human 5 got in EG1. If the movie was less concerned with being self containable, a lot more probably could have been done. Flash Sentry was far from the only time waster we got in EG1.

Considering they could only use Flash for a few scenes, I actually thought they got a pretty establishment with just him helping thwart the photograph framing and the little gag like him walking into a door or dancing like a dumbo. He couldn't get many big scenes because of the nature of the media (girl oriented) and because the first movie was a great big dry run for everybody.

And even with that taken out of the equation, you still have the Sunset comparison. Sunset Shimmer was pretty badly executed as a villain, but was fantastically portrayed as a reformed villain from the development she got in the next two movies. Quite easily, as I detailed in my last few paragraphs on the first post, Flash Sentry could have gotten similar treatment, both in terms of character development and plot points with him being turned against the girls. But, be it creative decisions or, as I heavily suspect, horrific fan backlash, that didn't happen; almost as if the team was afraid to give him any more screen time than absolutely necessary because of the response.

tl;dr - Flash was another experiment by McCarthy, but until Sunset who got a chance to shine in the next movies, he got shot down after the first one because the reaction he got. It's not his fault really because the first movie was very rough for everyone.

3723673

And actually Lance, I will correct you on something. There pretty much was no mandate to make Flash or make him a love interest. In fact Hasbro was quite lax about the creation of the EG movies. The only rule they really gave DHX was "Put them in a high school", from their it was free roam for the creative team. He's just as much a creative experiment of McCarthy as Sunset was. Evidently, an experiment that pretty much failed.

Seriously? Well shoot, I stand corrected. Come on DHX, what were you thinking?

Superfluous is the grab word for the first movie. When you really pick into the meat and bones of it, how many characters in that movie or even RR were really needed? Who really contributed to the plot? I love the sirens as a group, but when you pick through it all, not much of the plot of RR would have changed if there was only two or even just one of them. Aria didn't even get a name drop and her contribution was "Bicker with Sonata" and "Back up Adagio".
...
If the movie was less concerned with being self containable, a lot more probably could have been done. Flash Sentry was far from the only time waster we got in EG1.
...

Believe me, I'm under no illusions whatsoever about Flash being the only superfluous or poorly-handled thing about the EqG series. It's kinda why I called him a microcosm of its problems. I have a lot to say about my feelings regarding EqG (both positive and negative), but since this discussion is specifically about Flash, I won't derail the blog by going into that rant. Unless you want to hear it, of course. '3'

But, be it creative decisions or, as I heavily suspect, horrific fan backlash, that didn't happen; almost as if the team was afraid to give him any more screen time than absolutely necessary because of the response.

It's not really surprising to me. In fact, it's a completely logical business practice. If your customers do not like something about your product, the safe thing to do is to either fix that thing, or get rid of it. People didn't like Sunset and Flash. They fixed Sunset since she was relevant to the plot, and removed (or in this case, reduced) Flash because he was not.

You actually got hate mail for it? Wow.
I would have liked Flash to have had a bit of a bigger part in the latest movie.
But for the most part, I just consider him a background character like Screwball, Bulk Biceps, and Lyra.

3723388

Ah, yes. I remember you claiming credit for creating a real-life Megaguirus last October. Any new Kaiju sightings lately?

When I watched the first two Equestria Girls, I respected Flash cause he kind of reminded me of myself (except I don't know how to play any musical instruments), since I would have also helped a girl I just met when no one else would.

Friendship Games came and my god did that break my heart. I couldn't for the life of me understand why Sunset and the others never bothered to tell Flash what was going on and that Sci-Twi was not the same person as Princess Twilight. I thought for sure they would, since they were so supportive of Twilight and Flash's relationship at the end of Rainbow Rocks. Seeing him so heartbroken and confused when Sci-Twi wouldn't give him the time of day really reminded me of myself.

In December 2011, I started dating this girl. We were into a lot of the same stuff, like anime and manga, and we would hang out a lot. I kissed her for the first time when we watched The Avengers in a theater. I thought we were so happy and I even dared to dream we would get married after we finished college. Then a few months later, she texted me and said she didn't want to hang out with me anymore and wouldn't even explain why. I would sometimes run into her at the store or something, but she would give me the cold shoulder and to this day I still don't understand where it went wrong.

Seeing Sci-Twi ignore Flash reminded me of that after all these years. The only difference is that Flash has no idea that he's got the wrong Twilight, just someone who looks like the person he likes giving him the cold shoulder. And the only person who cared about him was Derpy.

If only Hasbro didn't give into peer pressure from the haters. I felt he could have contributed a lot to Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games.

3723714

I have a lot to say about my feelings regarding EqG (both positive and negative), but since this discussion is specifically about Flash, I won't derail the blog by going into that rant. Unless you want to hear it, of course. '3'

If you so wish, feel free to PM me. But if you'd be so kind buddy, let's try to keep any discussion centered on just a few characters here :twilightsheepish:

It's not really surprising to me. In fact, it's a completely logical business practice. If your customers do not like something about your product, the safe thing to do is to either fix that thing, or get rid of it. People didn't like Sunset and Flash. They fixed Sunset since she was relevant to the plot, and removed (or in this case, reduced) Flash because he was not.

Problem is, who do you think were the ones complaining, or least had the most vocal complaints? The average fan, the young girls watching the movie and buying to toys, or the reactionary brony who cites the reasons I did in the blog post to justify their hate?

As for making them pot relevant, there really wasn't anything Sunset intrinsically had in the first film that tied to what was needed in RR. Yet they still made it work for her. Had they had the will to do it and no fear of screwing around with the more vocal parts of the fan base, I am fully convinced Flash could have easily been made relevant into the later films. Again, music based movie not using the one character from the last film who was musically inclined? But, didn't play out like that because of backlash, and this is for a male character in a primarily female medium. If shows aimed at one sex demographic have taught me anything, it's that you really only get one shot at this if you're not the demographic being played too. Flash Sentry lost his shot due to the fan outcry.

3723786
Well, I just hope that they'll take the lessons learned with Flash Sentry to heart when they introduce further male characters. And considering we've got one on the way in season 6 (Flutterbro), we'll be finding out sooner rather than later. '3'

And now, dude: you've gotten some more respect from me as a friend. As it happens, i also really like Flash Sentry, and i really do love seeing him whenever the opportunity arises. Also like how you tore down the hater's claims very well. I mean, even in spite of what Hasbro did with him in the following movies, i do love that aside from the humane 6, he was also the only other person who helped Twilight in some way, or another. It may not have been much to some people, but i think it was still cool. Though now, i think i do wish they gave him some of Sunset's development, as well. Who knows? Maybe even help the two make ammends, and even get back together? Either way, Flash is awesome, and i'm glad you think so, too. Just wish i could express it a bit more, but it don't matter.:pinkiehappy:

If I could just throw my thoughts out here when it comes to Flash in "Bridge": you're using the PONY form. All we got of Pony!Flash was a light sense of humor ("We've got to stop bumping into each other like this~"), and general guard responsibilities. Other than that, all we've seen of Flash is in the EG realm.

So I truly find it unfair to put one's hatred on BOTH versions of Flash, when all the "problems" have been with Human!Flash.

Pony!Flash is basically a blank slate. He doesn't know Twilight personally (yet), there is no high school tropes in the MLP world, and his personality could be a good deal different since he's an adult and not a teenager.

I think what the fandom needs to do is learn to draw the line. You can have your problems with Human!Flash, but Pony!Flash has done nothing to garner the hate.

A good point to make is Twilight herself.
Pony!Twilight? We know her and love her.
Human!Twilight? Quite different.

Yes there are some similarities between the two, and of course Humanlight is basically Ponylight in the past. However, this proves that the two characters don't change at the same time. So for all we know, Pony!Flash could be more reserved, more responsible, etc etc

So, these are my 2 cents.

3724077 Please clarify this for me. Did the hate mail come from the pony Flash's brief appearances in Xenilla's arc in the Crystal Empire, or that brief scene in the Holiday Special where Monster X and Irys emerged as humans (even though you didn't use his name, I recognized his description)? Because if it was the latter, my god that is just sad, and the haters have some serious issues.

3724132
if i recall, it was due to his cameo with Xenilla.

3724132

Mostly Xenilla, but I actually did get a few anons about the EG special.

There is a big question that needs answered about the so-called "HATRED" of Flash Sentry, sense despite his lack of popularity in the series, there are still a majority of artists, writers, and reviewers (I'm looking at YOU Silver Quill) that give the guy some form of credit. Maybe not as high as Sunset, no, but still some.

No Tarb, the question of the day is out of all the "hatred" that Flash gets from the fandom, which REASON so far has been the most vocal?

I'm gonna say two words, and let it all sink in:
"Waifu Stealer".

And I think that pretty much sums it up why Flash is so easily disregarded, at least the most VOCALLY compared to your reasons stated. Does this reason include the majority of the fandom? Maybe not, but it's the loudest reason I'M hearing at least, and one that's denying a possible character some actual growth in the series. :twilightangry2:

Hey, there is possibly a new movie coming up, with any luck he will be more pro-active in it.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Tarb.

I'm certainly not going to try and comment on all the points brought up in the back-and-forth between Tarb and Lance, but I do have a thought or two to spare.

I think Flash Sentry is a perfectly fine character. To put it in wrestling terms, there's no problem with the gimmick, the problem is the booking. there doesn't seem to me to be any fault with Flash's lines, I've just always thought his use was sub-par. His Deus ex Machina in the1st film, I thought, was a total waste of conflict. If you're writing the film, why would you have Sunset try to frame Twilight if you're just going to blow it up two minutes later, with such convenience. My problem is not that it was Flash that did it, but that their own plot device was torpedoed so soon. And I do think that Flash took some of the heat for that angle, since he was the messenger.

I was a bit disappointed that he didn't have bigger part in Rainbow Rocks, I think there was plenty of room, I think he could have even become a part of the protagonist's faction. I would go so far as to say that they should try and rekindle some kind of relationship between humanFlash and Sunset, ala something like what Faith-Wolff has going on in her story, which I think is a dynamite concept.

I don't think he was even in FG, to my recall, oh wait, aside from having Sci-Twi fall over him, WITHOUT getting all crushy, which I thought was interesting.

As for Pony Flash, he's largely unexplored, so they could really do a lot with him.

And for, what I agree is the most potent factor in the 'fan-lash', his *cough* 'waifu stealing' I think there is an overlooked factor: There's a whole lotta Beta going on. I mean, I get the target audience and all, but come on, Flash was a rare chance for a decent male protagonist. But the fact that his contributions to the events in the EG movies, are shall we say...... less than heroic? Not so much Sinbad or Beowulf, as much as city councilman of the friend-zone. Had he been a more developed, stronger male character, I don't think there would have been the outcry that there was.

To touch on the bit about Lauren Faust not wanting to ship the Mane 6. I agree that that can work for a certain length of time, and that the show's focus is on the adventures of friendship that they go on. But there is a certain point where it becomes untenable. These are, what one can presume to be, 6, attractive, available mares, who are in a ripe age for finding love interests. that fact that not one of them in the course of 5 seasons has had a relationship, strains the limits of good mythopoeia, Rarity and Twilight especially. The possible stance that exploring these kinds of relationships is not appropriate for little girls is to me, absurd. Little girls are the original shippers, they play house, and are naturally adept at constructing complex relationships between characters. Adult women are the base audience of soap operas, basically shows about shipping. They also observe the older females in their lives engage in relationships with men, be it their fathers, or the boyfriends/girlfriends of older siblings.
I think showing members of the Mane 6 in romantic relationships is past due.

3723388 ...And you thought THAT was a good idea...? Thankfully it doesn't sound like ya birthed a Megagiriuis...

I just don't care about him. Don't want no body to talk about him, just ignore him and we're good.

To be fair, I liked Starlight Glimmer during her season premiere, but when it got to 'Cutie Remark' that's when I started to hate her.
It would have been more interesting if Starlight was the minion to a bigger bad, something like Ayana and Iris from 'Gamera 3'. How much more fitting that could've been, like the reason for Starlight taking everyone's cutie marks is to leave Equestria vulnerable for her master's arrival. Then when Starlight see's how evil her master is, That's when she switches sides.

Or if you are going to do the alternate future route, how about Starlight has taken over Ponyville, Celestia has lost faith in ponykind, Sweetapple acres has turned into a factory, Fluttershy has grown aggressive (and joins a group of rebels lead by Zecora), Rainbow Dash lives in shame because she failed help her friend (and lost the race), Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis, Sombra, Discord, and Tirek have conquered most of Equestria, and are converging towards Ponyville. And it's up to Twilight and Spike, to rekindle their relationships with their friends, overthrow Starlight, and set everything right.

Claps Finally someone who sees how POINTLESS the Fandom kept shitting all over Flash for the dumbest reasons! (And I like what you did there with "Fandumb") and for that...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the poor guy gets too much hate. Even if he gets kinda cheesy he's a stand up guy. He was a good soldier... even if he's kinda scared of Luna's pet.

FINALLY someone who shares my annoyance for the Flash Sentry hate! :pinkiehappy: Seriously, this subject has bothered me from the moment I first heard the complaints.

The most recent version of the hate was from a friend of mine who dislikes/hates Flash because "he made Twilight cry". Now if Flash hadn't been under the Dazzling's spell, I'd have joined him in that anger. I pointed out to him that Flash would NEVER had been mean to Twilight if he wasn't being control. He responded along the lines of "He still did it", and I responded with a metaphor: "That's like if someone shot a person with a gun, and that person's family blaming the gun when the guy doing the shooting is to be blamed. The gun can't fire the bullet without the hand/finger to pull the trigger. As such, without the Dazzling's magic, Flash and Twilight would have been doing their usual antics in that scene."

And for this I'm not going to harp on the "He stole mah waifu!" nonsense because that excuse is so pathetic I'm not even going to grant it the time.

Blech, that's the one I hate most of all. :pinkiesick:

Yes! Thank you!

There's actually another reason. The shippers. Mother of GOD, the shippers. All of the lesbian shippers despise Flash because he's disrupting their OTP and actually accuse his inclusion to being passively homophobic.

Excuses! :twilightangry2:

To quote TFP Shockwave. "I find your argument logical."
