I just thought of something and it makes too much sense.
Starswirl the Bearded made a whole bunch of spells in his lifetime, and it's said he didn't really value friendship. And given that one of his spells was eventually able to be modified to travel back in time for a longer period...
This all leads me to believe that Starswirl could basically be the pony equivalent to Rick from Rick and Morty. Lets think about this here. Didn't value friendship all that much, is incredibly talented, results of research turn out to heavily endanger time and space as we know it, and canonically only seems to have one shown friend (Scorpan)
