Noble Thought

I sometimes pretend I have a posting schedule other than "sometime soon."

    Personal life disruption

Hey, everyone. I felt I owed you all an explanation for why it's now two weeks past the last scheduled update for Primrose War.

So, I've had a bit of a personal upheaval. I'm moving forward with building a house, not immediately, but there's been a lot of talking with friends and family about what it'll mean going forward. So that's one thing.

    Unexpected Hiatus

Hello everyone. I wanted to apologize for the lengthy, unexpected hiatus of The Primrose War. It was definitely unplanned, and this time I haven't been writing. Work, leading up to the holidays, has been more stressful than usual with the rush to get things done before I take my two week end-of-year vacation.

    Next chapter delayed

Hello everyone! I apologize, but the next chapter of Primrose War will be delayed by a bit. Between work and a few novel releases that I've been looking forward to, I haven't made as much progress as I wanted to on the next chapter. I do have a solid outline, though, for the rest of the book as well as part of the next, so I haven't been idle.

Sneak Peek! · 11:51pm Jan 27th, 2016

I just finished semi-finalizing this bit... and it's not the whole story, or even part of it... but I just loved this interaction, so I thought I'd share far ahead of the story being released.

Cadance and Luna, Equestria Girls. Still a bit rough, yet, but I loved the interaction.

“You are… surprisingly sneaky. It’s no wonder I always got blamed for missed cookies.”

“That you ate.”

“Yes, but I was always careful to leave evidence tracking back to you.”

Cadance snorted, shaking her head. “Lulu… ‘I am Cadance. I did it.’ written on a card is not ‘evidence.’”

“I was framed at least once. I stopped leaving cards after the second time.”

“Celestia did that. I suggested it to her.” Cadance stuck out her tongue, laughing.

“That sneak! I knew she had crumbs on her hands!”

“I’ve missed you,” Cadance said after her laughter faded into a goofy grin. “I needed a laugh.”

“You also need to eat.” Luna prodded Cadance’s belly, prompting a squeak. “You get too focused, Cady.”

Her stomach growled at the reminder that she hadn’t eaten since dinner last night.

“And that’s my queue to take you out on a sis-date. Shining won’t mind, will he?”

“Hah. Nope. Maybe a little jealous… but I’ll make it up to him.”

“Haha, ew.” Luna stuck out her tongue as she stood up, offering a hand. “I don’t want to know what my little sister does.”

“Oh come on, that wasn’t even remotely—” She blinked, glancing up at Luna’s shining eyes and bright smile. She could see the worry behind the facade, as she had always been able to. She swallowed the retort and grinned. “Okay, who has a one-track mind? I don’t need to guess what kind of plans you and Raven have this weekend.”

Surprise flickered across her sister’s face for just an instant, replaced with a wry smile. “Oh, goodie. Cadydid is reading minds again. Remind me not to think this.” Luna held one hand to her forehead, brow furrowed, chin thrust out petulantly.

“Oh no! I’m being assaulted by images of cats! Woe is me! How shall I ever recover from the horror!” Cadance followed her sister up, giggling. She glanced at the envelope, shook her head minutely, and turned away from it with a smile. She could talk about it later. Right now… She draped an arm around Luna’s waist and hugged her close as they navigated their way out of the house. “I meant game night. Or movie night. Those cheesy B horror movies he loves, or some action movie with Van Hoofer in it.”

Luna made a face. “Raven loves the same kind of movies. I swear, if Shining weren’t married, I wouldn’t have a fiance.” A beat later, as Luna fished in her purse for her keys, she shuddered. “They don’t know that they both enjoy the same movies, do they?”

Realization dawned. “Oh. Oh, sweet heavens. I don’t think they’ve talked enough to realize it. When they do…”

“My life will be over,” Luna said with all the mock gloom she could muster. “I will never see her again.”

“Or I, my Shining. Oh, woe is us! How shall we ever cope?”

“Well, if it ever comes to pass…” Luna sighed theatrically, her eyes sparkling. “It’s a good thing I already have two great sisters who will keep me company well into my spinsterhood.”

“Oh, come on. I’m going to be the spinster. You, with your ‘goth’ phase, I think you’d get along just fine. Remember? Eyeliner and black dresses… Hairstyles and dark poetry.” Cadance pretended to think about it as she made a show of locking up. “I think once you even pretended to be a vampire for a week. Yes! I remember, you did!”

“If you ever tell her that,” Luna growled, prodding her with a dagger-like finger. “I will tell Shining all about your crush on Hoppy Trot.”

“You wouldn’t dare!”

“Try me.” Luna grinned at her over the roof of her car, one eyebrow arched. “I still have video evidence.”

Vile woman.”

“You have no idea what I’m capable of, sister-dear. Now get in. Lunch awaits!”

Some background: Cadance isn't actually their biological sister. She's adopted, and only about five years younger than Luna, while Celestia is five years older than Luna. The background is more complex than that, of course, and ties into some world building that ties into the story itself, but is not included here. I just love writing sisterly interactions like this.

Huh. Well, that's certainly an interesting setup for their relationship. Definitely looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

First Luna is Celestia's daughter, now Cadance is her adopted sister?

YOU'RE OUT OF CONTROL, MAN!

Saw that. Curious, but I'll wait until the show addresses it.

If you're even more curious... it's what came out of the Illusion of Choice writeoff entry I did featuring the two of them.

I love uprooting established canon and seeing in what ways I can twist it, and how that twisting might change things. It goes deeper in the case of Mother of the Moon.

The first three of a five part blog quintet that I started regarding ancient world history. I have parts four and five sort of built up, but I don't have enough material yet to convert them... also, it takes a lot of work to make them from the format I have them in into a blog like those.

Very interesting work so far!
