    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Silk Shimmer · 4:36pm Jan 25th, 2016

No relation to Sunset Shimmer; the canon character she's related to is Party Favor. Nevertheless, I am extremely proud of myself for coming up with a lovely name that sounds so purely pony, and I fear that I'd never come up with such a perfect name again.

...okay, I'll get on with it.

She was born in Canterlot to skilled magic teacher Quasar Rune and beautiful, showstopping magician Merry Maykin. She was preceded in birth by her brother Kazam Rune, who at four did not take kindly to having his attention divided between him and his baby sister.

Like her brother before her, Silk had spurts of powerful magic coming from her horn and causing trouble wherever she was. She once ended up stealing some cotton candy, which she and Kaz scarfed down and her parents sheepishly paid for. Her magic spurts also came during tantrums, which Quasar, Merry, and Kaz still bear scars of thanks to flying toys. And lastly, her father regrets ever tickling her, since magic always ended up blowing up in his face whenever he did so.

That's not to say she was a rowdy child; those spurts were mostly accidents (the cotton candy was totally on purpose). She is one of few toddlers who held still while being dressed up by her mother. Given Canterlot's society, there was no doubt that she and her brother had been subjected to fine grooming more than once when they had to go to an event. She enjoyed looking as pretty as her mother, and enjoyed meeting lots of ponies. A lot of the Runes' friends often remarked on how much of a doll little Silk was.

When she was three, she noticed that her mother was beginning to get round, followed by the announcement that a new baby was on the way. While Kazam was once again exasperated, little Silk was thrilled to be a big sister. She took to daydreaming about her little sister, with them being pretty as princesses, eating sweets together, and following in Mama's hoofsteps and being beautiful magicians.

The baby turned out to be a colt. While initially disappointed and refusing to hold baby Party Favor, she soon warmed up to him. After all, her little brother had an infectious smile, an adorable laugh, and an overall cheerful attitude that lit up whatever room that he ended up crawling in. Despite their parents worrying that they'd have a third period of insane magic spurts, it never happened with Party Favor (who was more content to mess with things with his hooves and mouth), and Silk could proudly say she was scar-free.

Growing older, she was taught how to channel her magic and use telekinesis by her father, and then her mother was quick to teach her a few tricks. Happy to be learning new things, Silk often got into her parents' stuff, usually with Party Favor following her lead (Kazam did it on occasion, usually snagging spellbooks). Of course, she was always caught, and often told to put the stuff away and clean up whatever mess she had made. It was a bit before both parents taught her more spells to expand her capabilities, such as cloudwalking and glamour. Showing off the spells at school in a talent show had her earning her cutie mark.

Other opportunities to learn more came with their family's annual visit to the Magic Expo in Las Pegasus, where she'd watch the tricks and stunts performed by various unicorns, her mother being one of them. She and Kazam were interested, and Party Favor was bored. She also found herself entranced by the many soothsayers, shamans, and creatures brought to the Expo, telling her various legends and spells cast by ponies of old. She still has a fairy tale book that projects images that she got from the Expo, and has often looked for ways to cast those ancient spells to dazzle ponies.

Of course, she made it a point to not go too far, such as dabbling in dark magic. Being told the story of her ancestor Wayer Rune by her father and alongside her brothers, Silk was frightened by the tragic ending, and vowed not to go in that direction. Of course, she was worried that her brothers would end up messing in that area, and had nightmares of them becoming supervillains.

There was a bittersweet relief when it came to Party Favor; much to the family's dismay, it turned out that his horn had a mineral concentration that prevented him from using any level of unicorn magic. Even though Silk could see Quasar's great disappointment in the news, she tried to comfort an upset Party Favor and reassure him that their father still loved him. Even though she was sad that her little brother wouldn't be able to understand the wonder of wielding magic, she at least knew he was not going bad anytime soon. However, she was later amazed when he demonstrated an ability to redirect his internal magic into his hobby of balloon modeling, turning simple balloons into complex structures and earning his own cutie mark.

She was still worried about Kazam though, who was experimenting with fusing things around the house and any animals that were in reach (whether it be their cat, one of Mama's doves, the neighbor's dog, or even Party Favor). Even after being scolded, he went right back to experimenting. It boggled her mind that he was clearly the favorite of their father for his magic ability, and was frustrated that her being a good girl didn't receive as much praise as Kazam's power. She was at least thankful that Quasar didn't like Kazam's bordering-on-unethical experiments, especially when he tried to do something to poor Party Favor. Silk usually went out with friends to avoid being caught in an experiment, and distracted herself from the thought with whatever activity she and her friends were doing.

With her friends, she was usually the magical show-off, giving her group of friends simultaneous makeovers, disguising herself as and imitating their teachers to make them laugh, and teaching them a few tricks. Sometimes her friends would fight over who'd give her a makeover when she was done with them, and she'd settle it by thinking of a number between one and a hundred in order to settle it. And of course, she tended to throw her own little magic shows at school, her teenage self giving a flirty vibe to her audience. She ended up with visits from a lot of colts, who were usually scared off by Kazam.

She always make sure to look nice whenever she went out, and she enjoyed dressing in some of the most fashionable clothes. Of course, she also enjoyed trips to the library, learning more about magic and magic theory. And whenever her parents were out, she was the one who cooked, since both her brothers have set fire to the kitchen and didn't seem to improve.

When she reached adulthood, she set off on her own, trying to follow the same path that her older brother had done before in doing stage shows all over Equestria (her fears of him dabbling in dark magic seemed to be relieved at the time). However, unlike before, where she was rather popular among her peers, she found herself rather timid among strangers, and her being quiet didn't exactly bring attention. It didn't help that Kazam was rapidly rising in popularity, and she couldn't help but feel jealous.

Unlike her proud brother who managed to attract attention by making a grand entrance, she ended up embarrassing herself more than once. Whether it be trying to force some flirty actions, by accidentally performing the wrong spell, or just by tripping and ruining her makeup or outfit, she wasn't quite successful in bringing the attention she wanted. Heck, sometimes she brought attention she didn't want, with some pieces of work assuming some certain things about her character and trying to force themselves on her. She always managed to escape.

It was not long before she received wind of Party Favor having gone missing, having left Canterlot because nopony was taking his talent seriously and were mocking him for his dud of a horn. She sympathized with him to a level, feeling discouraged about her own talent and thinking she didn't deserve her cutie mark. Still, she promised her parents (especially her distraught mother) that she'd look for him, and continued to travel Equestria. Sometimes she'd see a light blue pony and approach him, only to find that he wasn't Party Favor. Some of those moments were embarrassing.

One day, she came across a pair of con ponies named Flim and Flam. Seeing that she had considerable talent but was having trouble getting on her feet, they offered to teach her how to make a grand entrance to wow a crowd of strangers. They also agreed to keep an eye out for Party Favor, and after some thought, Silk figured that there was no harm done.

She helped them devise a big scam involving a "circus train", bringing other ponies in to pretend to be freaks. Using glamour to disguise the normal ponies as freaks and a cloud-walking spell to help one be a "pegasus born without wings", Silk felt bad about fooling other ponies, but she was at least improving her entrances. She even lied to her parents about her activities at the time. Besides, she reasoned to herself that dishonesty wasn't that bad as long as she was learning something and still looking for her little brother.

Then, their train rolled into a town called Halterside, which had been in the middle of celebrating their town holiday. One of the residents of that town turned out to be an old lackey of the Flim Flams, Silver Shill, who was not pleased that they had come to his hometown. Even more incensed was his party pony sister, Comedy Gold, who was already upset that she couldn't throw the town celebration (instead Cheese Sandwich was there to throw it while she was recovering from surgery), and didn't like being shown up even more. Goldie had noticed that Silk was the one tying the whole scam together, and opted to sabotage the operation by pulling the unicorn out of the picture. However, she failed when her frying pan failed to knock Silk out, and then the Flim Flams caught her and knocked her out.

They then performed an elaborate scheme in order to kidnap the party pony, which had Silk hesitantly going along. During the scheme of glamour spell, framing Goldie, and fighting Cheese over what should be done with her (to the point of a musical duet battle that Cheese dragged his brother Tomato into), Silver Shill had quickly figured out Silk's part in the scheme, and convinced her to put a stop to the madness.

After both schemes came down after her confession, she instantly sought to make reparation to Silver, Goldie, and the Sandwiches. She saw her chance when Tomato Sandwich was pushing Silver to open a pizzeria with the pirate ship used as decoration in the part, and offered to get money for the endeavor. She and the Sandwiches went to Las Pegasus (having its Magic Expo), got money from Kazam and worked for him for a time, and got involved in a crazy fight with a vampire army (which Kazam caused and was arrested for) before she went back to Halterside to start the business with Silver. Before she parted with the Sandwiches, they had promised to look for Party Favor.

The residents of Halterside loved the new business, and between Silk Shimmer's tricks and Comedy Gold's antics, they often said it was an enjoyable experience. Silk often rotated between her tricks, waiting on tables, and cooking, and wished she knew how to clone herself. She formed a friendship with Silver and Goldie, and they often took her around town to see what Halterside had to offer her. She eventually met their older sisters Platinum Pen and Pearly Whites.

One hot July day, Silver's neighbor came in with a letter for Silk Shimmer. She was overjoyed to find that it was from Party Favor, and was surprised to learn that he had ended up joining that Equality Cult that she had read about in the news the previous fall, but was now back to his former glory. He only knew that she was in Halterside because the Sandwiches had been there and told him. In her glee, she immediately informed her parents that she knew where he was... sort of. It wasn't until Hearth's Warming that they would reunite with Party Favor.

Although working in the pirate ship pizzeria alongside Silver and Goldie is fun, she continues to work toward her goal of being a great magician. She hopes to someday achieve her perfect entrance and enchant strangers like she had done with her friends as a teenager.

Yikes. Parents of a unicorn would be wise to invest in soft toys. Most of the time, you want to avoid sharp edges to keep the baby from hurting itself. With a telekineticist, the tables are turned.

In any case, good to hear that Silk's on an upswing.
