Princess Twilight Sparkle is immortal, but immortality comes at a price, especially for the Princess of Friendship. Her friends are dying around her and she has no one else in the world to call friend, other than Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and Discord. They are friends, but it wasn't as special a bond as she had with Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Applejack and Fluttershy. Plus, her destiny has changed- slightly, and with each of her friends' deaths she find that another star on her flank winks out. The only strings she had left to sanity were held in place by Spike, but when Spike is killed by a female dragon while trying to make an egg, she loses it. Twilight becomes her Nightmare Self (all alicorns have one) and she calls herself Lone Star (on account of the one star on her flank). She wants to be with her friends in the Starscape (the pony version of heaven) but she is immortal. The only way that an immortal can die is if they kill what makes them immortal, for Celestia it is the sun, for Luna it is the moon, and for Twilight Sparkle it is friendship. Now the only way to truly kill friendship is to kill all life on Equista, and Lone Star was willing to do that.

The other immortals try to stop her (again this is Celestia, Luna, Discord, and Cadence), but an immortal long forgotten as a living being is the one to put a stop to her, consuming Lone Star and herself. That immortal was the Tree of Harmony. Discord as the being of Chaos, cannot exist in a world of magic without harmony to balance it. So he disappeared to a pocket dimension, promising to return as soon as Harmony regenerated. Upon leaving, Discord mumbles to himself that he thought Fluttershy was the immortal Harmony, but this is not the case. With Harmony and Discord no longer in the world, the importance of magic lessens, bringing the rise of technology.

Now, a thousand years later 16 are born and with each birth causes more growth to the Tree of Harmony, and with them more Elements are constructed.
