    Chapter Forty-One: Sneak Peek!

    Enjoy!

“So. We’re gonna get married. You girls are becoming ‘wives’ and Lero’s becoming a ‘husband.’ What about me? What do I get to become, once we’re all married?”

“Our little scaly son.” Lyra answered.

Spike half-grinned. “So basically, things pretty much stay the same for me, personally.”

Sneak Peek Of Chapter 39 · 5:12pm Jan 20th, 2016

Hey, everyone! Just finished writing this scene, and just HAD to share it with all of you!

Finally, the tornado was beginning to form. Lightning Dust was almost finding the whole thing entertaining. Watching these winged sloths strain themselves flying round and round their podunk little reservoir. Knowing if she were to take flight and join their efforts, the water would be halfway to Cloudsdale.

Just the sight of this tornado was making Lightning Dust remember the smaller one she, herself, had made early on, back when she was just starting out in the Academy as a Wonderbolts cadet. Well… her wingpony, Meadow Flower, had helped a bit, if you wanted to get technical. But mostly it had been Lightning Dust. Spitfire had recognized that, right off the bat: “A bit excessive for cloudbusting, but judging from your time, it was obviously an effective tactic,” those had been her words.

Not that Meadow Flower had raised a peep about Lightning nabbing all the credit for that wonderful stunt. None of those other weak second-raters Spitfire also taught, either. By this point, they all knew who Spitfire’s ace cadet was: Lightning Dust! Lightning was right where she needed to be at this point in time; standing next to Spitfire. Her apprentice in all but name.

It was kinda ironic. Fifteen-ish years ago, back in elementary school, Lightning Dust had been merciless on those brownnosing teacher’s pets. Made them wish they’d never been born. And look at her now, kissing up to ol’ Orange-’n’-Yellow! Ah, but Spitfire and all the other Wonderbolts were the only ones worth turning herself into a pet for. It was only temporary, anyway. At the rate Lightning was climbing the ladder, she’d be on equal standing with Spitfire, Soarin’, and all the rest within a year, tops.

For now, Lighting Dust had to focus on watching the Ponyville pegasi from ground level. What a sad pack of losers! They made her classmates look like champions. Part of her was tempted to fly into the tornado and show them how it was really done! But in the long run, it’d probably be unkind, depriving these out-of-shape slugs a chance to really flap those feathers for once in their drab, mediocre lives!

“Would you look at her,” Spitfire said, loud enough to be heard over the tornado’s building roar.

Lightning Dust followed the path of her mentor’s gaze to a blue-coated mare with a rainbow-colored mane and tail. The sight of this mare sparked a sudden, powerful feeling within Lightning Dust. Was it the unique color of her mane? Her fit figure? The way she was about the same age as Lightning, herself? Or maybe it was all that strong determination she showed when she flew.

Lightning Dust hated this other mare. Hatred at first sight.

It was a completely irrational thing, this hatred. Nonetheless, Lightning Dust hated this other mare as though she’d swindled every bit out of her bank account. Lightning hated her as though she’d spat in her pie. Lightning hated her, without even knowing her name. It wasn’t as though they had met before, right?

And then, Lightning Dust understood that the other mare had given her a good basis for this hatred… once she realized that Spitfire had been following Miss Rainbow Tail’s flight trail this entire time. Spitfire was as entranced by that rainbow-tailed mare as it was possible to be without getting hearts in her eyes.

“Just… you gotta admit, that’s not how an amateur flies. Doesn’t it remind you of the way we fly in the Wonderbolts?”

Lightning Dust watched Miss Rainbow Tail circle round and round her part of the cyclone like a gadfly around a dead badger. At one point, she did a hoof-bump with a confident-looking mare with pink mane and a yellow coat, who seemed to be her friend.

“She’s fast; I’ll give her that,” Lightning said, raising her wing against a stray branch kicked up the the wind. “But she doesn’t fly like you do, ma’am.”

“You’re right,” said Spitfire. “If anything, I’d say she flies like you do, Lightning Dust.”

Lightning had to fight down the urge to kick dirt into her teacher’s face.

Eventually, once the Ponyville pegasi had achieved sufficient wingpower, the water was lifted up from the reservoir, and was funneled up to Cloudsdale. As the hundred-odd pegasi sat around on the grass, reclaiming their breath, Spitfire flew straight to where the rainbow-tailed mare was and Lightning Dust followed right behind her.

“Hey, there!” Spitfire called.

The mare looked up from the tree she’d been leaning against. Now that she was a little closer, Lightning Dust could see three sappy little butterflies on her flank.

“Um… hello?” asked the mare.

“I saw the way you handled yourself up in the air. Impressive flying!” said Spitfire. “Gotta ask; were you ever part of the Wonderbolts Academy?”

“Uh... no…”

“You sure?” asked Spitfire. “Maybe you were a dropout or…?”

“No,” said the rainbow-tailed mare, shyer than ever. “That is, I’d remember being in the Wonderbolts, and that never happened.”

Spitfire removed her goggles and squinted closer to the mare. “Then where do I know your face from?”

“Um… well, I… I dunno,” the mare stammered. “Well, except that I am one of the Bearers of the Elements of Harmony. Kindness is my Element. It could be that you’ve seen my face in a magazine or a newspaper somewhere with the other Bearers. Maybe.”

Spitfire nodded. “Yeah. That must be it. Anyway, I just wanted to say that you fly like a cadet at the Wonderbolts Academy. Both in terms of speed and style. Who trained you? Do you maybe have a relative at our...”

“Nopony trained me!” the mare insisted. “Although… well, I guess you could say I trained myself.”

“Trained yourself.” A smile crossed Spitfire’s face; a smile Lightning Dust loathed to see directed at Miss Butterfly Butt. “What’s your name, filly?”

“M… my name’s Rainbow Dash, Miss Spitfire,” said Rainbow Dash, cringing apologetically, as though it might be too forward of her to already know the name of a celebrity.

“Then let me ask something, Rainbow Dash; would you be interested in developing your flight talents at our Academy?” Spitfire offered. “The Wonderbolts could use ponies with skills like yours! Whaddaya say?”

Love it. Though I have to ask why the events of hurricane fluttershy are occurring after the swap happened? Did ponyville get selected for tornado duty again? Unless they have been using an unusual amount of rain this year it is doubtful their reservoir needs emptying. I was under the impression a different city was selected every year.

Don't worry; the events of Hurricane Fluttershy certainly happened. The Cloudsdale ponies just ran out of water again at this later point in time and they decided to draw from the same reservoir this time around.

Or not, I still need to take an editor's pass on this.

Consistency check: I will state that Rainbow didn't seem at all to react as one who had their love for the Wonderbolts rekindled (as per that chapter where they went to watch that derby).
And seems odd they would reselect the same reservoir, the whole point is to cycle through a bunch of them so that their reservoir has a chance to refill, no?

Both your points are very valid, Swiftest. I'll be reworking this scene with them in mind. Thank you!
