    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Platinum Pen · 8:15am Jan 14th, 2016

January 14th, and it's Penny's turn.

Platinum Pen, or "Penny" as she is called, was born in the seaside town of Halterside to lighthouse keeper Noble Metal and his jewelry salespony wife Sunny Crystal. From day one, she had been a serious filly, and it was hard for her rather cheerful parents to get her to crack a smile. It took awhile before they finally got her to crack, though it took an unfortunate accident involving eggs to do so. Still, they were quick to snap a picture of the beautiful, dimpled smile, and they hung it on the wall. It still hangs there even when she's an adult.

At the age of two, she was joined by a sister named Pearly Whites. Unlike Penny, who was rather easygoing and okay with whatever came her way, Pearl turned out to be really fussy. Penny found herself annoyed with the constantly crying baby, and always tried to talk down the tantrums, though with some clear venom in her voice. Noble and Sunny found her behavior rather strange for a toddler, and had to remind her that she couldn't reason with a baby.

A few more years passed, and she and Pearl had a baby brother, an easygoing and timid little colt named Silver Shill. During this time, Penny started school, and quickly showed everypony that she was the smartest girl in class. Some jealous classmates tried to pick on her, but being as unbreakable as she was, all she had to do was glare to scare them off. She ended up accumulating a social circle of similarly smart fillies, and they always liked to imitate the adult professions they saw in their lives, and talk about their little siblings.

She was developing a sense of pride during this time, between being so smart in school, being the good girl compared to Pearl's whiny attitude, and helping her mother with the baby. Though she still hardly smiled, she was still rather content with her life, and it had been that way for several more years. At the age of nine, she earned her cutie mark when she wrote and read aloud an essay that ended up persuading the teacher to enforce the rules better.

When she was ten, her youngest sister Comedy Gold was born. Finding that the little pale yellow baby could not hold still, Penny was always prepared with a leash and always strapping her down whenever her diaper was to be changed (preventing her from bouncing or rolling away). She, Pearl, and Silver always had to team up to keep little Goldie from toddling into one situation or another, and to keep her from eating whatever came into view. Sometimes Penny missed hanging out with friends because Goldie kept getting into trouble, and was somehow teleporting into the least desirable places.

It was a good thing that Penny was not the type to panic, since Pearl and Silver would be freaking out whenever Goldie went missing. She had a habit of being blunt about them being useless in that kind of situation, however, and was not shy in berating Pearl for focusing too much on some stupid, minor thing, or Silver for being a pushover. Her usual dry tone often came across as mean, and Noble often had to remind her that her speeches toward them were not really helping them overcome those weaknesses.

Six more years passed, and she certainly thought herself as an adult. But, she was still being condescending toward her siblings. In her teenage mindset, Pearl still overreacted to everything, Silver was still a terribly awkward wimp, and Goldie was still a rabble-rouser. She looked after them often, thinking that her parents weren't good enough for the job of raising her siblings. They needed a strong, smart mare like her to raise them, and she was sure that she could do it herself if she wanted to.

Then tragedy struck.

When her father was killed in a storm caused by some of Penny's reckless pegasi classmates, this perception of herself crumbled. She watched as Pearl and Silver withdrew and went much quieter, and Goldie's temper ended up being more fiery. She attempted to keep her composure, wanting to be strong for her family, but she found herself lashing out, getting into petty arguments and letting more emotion than usual show. It took a table on fire for her to realize that she was no less flawed than her siblings were, and went out to comfort each one, as they all were grieving Noble's death.

Hearth's Warming Eve had her crying in her room for the first time in years.

She saved up money to go to college, promising herself that she'd send money to help her mother and siblings get by. Passing through law school with flying colors, she moved north to Manehattan. While her first few years were rough, seeing as being new at her job ponies were kind of iffy on her, she soon got into the groove when she won a case and proved the innocence of a metalworker named Coppersmith, who was accused of robbing a high-profile store.

She kept on bumping into Coppersmith on multiple occasions, whether it be at the park, on the street, in a library, or in a restaurant. Penny wondered for a time if he was stalking her, since Manehattan was a rather large city. It turned out that he frequented the same places she liked to frequent, especially since he didn't notice her half the time and was usually with friends. It was strange, but she became rather accustomed to his presence, and whenever he noticed her, he always took the time to say "hi". Becoming friends, they decided to have a few get-togethers.

They didn't quite realize they were in love until Coppersmith made an offhand joke and Penny ended up laughing. Copper was surprised and enchanted by her smile, and was eager to call their get-togethers "dates". An embarrassed Penny was reluctant to do so until about a month later. Several more months passed before they got engaged.

A couple years after she and Copper wed, Penny gave birth to their son, who she had named Noble Metal after her late father. Little Noble is the apple of her eye, being a curious and imaginative colt always eager to talk about superheroes and adventurers. A small smile graces her face whenever he goes off on a wild story, and she and Copper are always watching, making sure he doesn't pull any stunts like Comedy Gold did.

Penny's mother is always happy to watch her grandson when she gets the chance, and her siblings absolutely adore their nephew.

Aww, happy end.

Though if I were Platinum, I'd be amazed at how my apparent stalker managed to have metal in his name that wasn't already included among my siblings. :raritywink:

The mental images produced by this are hilarious. And yet geniuinely make me feel sorry for Platinum, and are entirely in character for Comedy Gold. Well done. :pinkiehappy:

3685185 A certain amount of name-related genre blindness must be a genetic factor in ponies, otherwise no one would ever names their kids "Flim and Flam." I bet Platinum didn't notice anything particular about Coppersmith for the same reason a young Carrot Cake never said to that mare he just met "hey, your name is Cup Cake, we're the only two Cakes that are completely unrelated, do you think that means we're destined to be married?"
