When doing stories set in the past... please do your research.

Not knowing what you are writing about can... cause issues.

    Example:
My dad read a book set in London and he was a bit annoyed that the author had characters riding bikes... 200 years before they were invented.

    Extreme example.

    Feature I wish Fimfiction had

I wish fimfiction would clean up the in-progress list.

    What do I mean?
Currently, if you go searching in the in-progress stories... you will find allot of dead/hiatus fics that the author never bothered to label as being dead/on hiatus.

    What I wish would happen.
    * Mark any story where the author hasn't logged onto the website in a year as dead.

Why harems are hard to do well

There are 3 types of harem stories.
    1. Porn -> This is done for exotic scenarios. The goal is to be erotic, not deep story telling.
    2. Wish fulfillment/Mary Sue -> Everyone loves my character! Everyone I fantasize about will mary him/her! And get along, even with wildly different and clashing personalities!
    3. Attempting to write a romance.

    Methods of getting to Equestria

There are many methods for getting to Equestria in FIM fiction. Thought I would make a list of them all.
If I missed any, please tell me.

    WIP

    1. Natural/supernatural event - A random portal sucks the human and/or his surroundings into Equestria. The advantage of this is that it is short and to the point.
    Examples:

    Your house in Equestria...

...and why it shouldn't magically have utilities hooked up.

I can't believe I'm actually having to post this... but... I just came across yet another story that does this.

Common Pony Story Elements - The good, The bad, The ok (WIP) · 5:36am Jan 5th, 2016

This is a work in progress.

When the MC meets the Main 6, CMC, Discord, Celestia, Luna for the first time.
* Please don't go into exhaustive detail about their physical characteristics. We know what they look like. A large percentage of us have them as our wallpaper. Note, this is complelty backwards from normal writing, but this is FIM fiction, we know what they usually look like.
* Don't give each pony their own paragraph describing their physical characteristics, from their snouts to the tip of their tails.
* What you should do: "She introduced herself as Rainbow Dash, flyer extraordinaire." or "I'm Rainbow Dash!"
* Note: Do give detail about their appearance when the MC is being romantic with them. "Her eye's sparkled with anticipation...."
* Note: Do give details if their appearances are different from cannon (AKA scars, battlegear, them all wearing clothing, etc.)

The (ex?) human knows the future of the ponies
* Bad Uses:
** If the events stay exactly the same. There was no point.
** If the writer has the human (or ex human) cause every event to go better than before, you have a Mary Sue.
** Seriously, Don't do it if the main character is powerful (physically or magically). Having the character know the future and capable of easily changing it is a bad combination. (No tension if the MC has alicorn level or above powers and knows all the future events as well)
* Good Ideas:
** Have events quickly change from the expected pattern. AKA alternative future with many expected events not even happening because of how the human changed events.
** Have some things become worse than the cannon story line because of the character's actions.
** Have an extremely weak MC work hard to change some future event despite his/her low power levels.
* Recommendation: Don't do it. Go ahead and stick your character in season x, but don't give them knowledge of season x+. Giving them foreknowledge removes opportunity for narrative tension. It removes the possibility of the reader going "Noooo.... don't go with her! It's a trap! She'll eat your love!"

The human knows or doesn't know about FIM
* FIM stories: It doesn't matter. I've seen equal numbers of both being good or bad... It does change relationships in the story and the type of stories you can tell.
* In general though.... I think it would be a bit easier to do a story about someone who doesn't know about FIM.
* Note: Wouldn't you find it really, really creepy to learn a strange alien has been observing both your public and private life? You need to account for this if you give them knowledge of FIM.

Human is now X stories - Some notes and ideas:
* Pony back legs bend exactly the same way human legs do. They just look different.
* Avoid doing alicorn/Discord. They are overpowered.
* To change things up... you could make it take a while for the character to learn to speak again. It would be like what happens to a stroke patient who recovers their voice. They know what they want to say.... and their vocal cords work... its just that they have to learn how to control them.

Language Barrier
* These stories are hard to write and there are very few of them on FIM fiction. (Some are good, some meh, some... bad, but overall... very few)
* Good example: Changing-Views (Language barrier starts in part 1)
* Good example: Celestia sleeps in
