Asriel may have been Flowey, but he didn't have a SOUL either. This means he couldn't feel any sadness or regret when he did those horrible things. When he became Asriel again, he did his best to make up for his mistakes by breaking the barrier keeping the monsters inside.

Besides, the reasons he acted the way he did in his final battle was because... he's a kid. He doesn't yet understand how to react to situations and move on from them, making the final scene with him even sadder as he finally realizes this.
